GAA Managerial Merrygoround Thread

Henry Shefflin strikes me as a lovely fella but the hurling snobs would know more than me about him.

I’m sure he’s a grand chap, he wasn’t very tactically astute though. Brought Galway backwards

He proves Kevs point about ex stars being parachuted in as managers and coaches.

Doubt that. You’d see so often that tenures like this are completely overlooked down the line.

Plus it’s Galway. Easy excuse that one.
Just throw your eyes to heaven when asked and everyone will nod in agreement.

A very poor return on investment for Fat Pat. The Limerick sleeper agent SON had them going in the right direction

When he was appointed the Galway chairman was out giving it billy big balls.

Shefflin’s reign really wasn’t a success though. Gave a good account of themselves in the 2022 AI semi-final but other than that it really was a very poor, underwhelming reign. Woeful in the league and no provincial title and no AI appearance.

In hindsight they never recovered from the gut punch in the Leinster final last year.

Well that is true logic doesn’t come into it. He’ll probably have the Waterford or Dublin job in a few weeks.

Me and @peddlerscross called Henry early doors.

He’ll surely threw in a few snack boxes for Davy

Kev had a bizarre outburst when Shefflin was appointed Ballyhale co-manager at the end of 2017. Saying he was arrogant and that it would backfire.

Shefflin proceeded to win two All-Irelands in two years with them.

But the signs that Shefflin was out of his depth at inter-county managerial level were there early enough. Cody played him like a fiddle in 2022. The Limerick semi-final in 2022 was the centrepiece of his tenure. That was that Galway group’s last hurrah. Even in that, his frantic jumping around on the sideline with the game level late on indicated he wasn’t the man.

It was obvious by the end of the 2023 season at latest that Galway were a sinking ship and Shefflin wasn’t the man to right things.

There was an element of Zidane/Padraic Joyce about Shefflin in Ballyhale as he was a Ballyhale man and had total respect from the players because of his standing in the game.

He went to Galway and failed in the same way that Zidane would likely bomb at Man United/Bayern Munich and Padraic Joyce would flop if he took over Mayo or Roscommon. They just wouldn’t get it and wouldn’t be got by those outside teams.

When you are an outsider anywhere, you need to be very very good to succeed as you are massively behind the 8 ball from the beginning.

Excellent post.

Cody’s handshake debacle should’ve had Shefflin motivating Galway to at least a provincial. He just wasn’t a big enough cunt to succeed at the top level.

Skehill went in two footed on Davy on the pod. Basically called him a cunt. Said he tapped up the Shane O’Neill management team before Shane was officially gone asking a few of them to stay on. Completely slated him as a man and a manager.

Also said he heard there’s a Tipp dream team being assembled of Sheedy O’Shea and Gleeson for the Galway job though he thought it was unlikely even though it was from a good source. Twould be a mad enough one.

It was a great no holes barred filleting. I say he knows more of the back story in Waterford but cant say it on air

Davy to Antrim makes sense for all concerned. The level of team willing to take him on has dropped. He’d be a big catch for Antrim and the mileage would be good.

He was right to use his platform to shut it down fast

Davy and Dublin is so crazy it just might work. Davy does his best work with an underdog. Fuck knows what the Waterford county board were thinking, they were nearly there and needed 5%

Outside managers have never worked in Galway. Babs got them to an All Ireland Final back in 1979. The All Ireland wins were delivered by Cyril Farrell and Michael Donoghue. Jarlath Cloonan, Noel Lane, Conor Hayes and Anthony Cunningham all got them to the final. None of the imports have got them to a final or even won a Leinster.
