GAA Managerial Merrygoround Thread

I’d have thought he was the obvious candidate but he said the other day he hasn’t been asked. A lot of locals don’t seem to rate him as a manager. Seems a perfect fit to me. Kilcormac have had the makings of county champions for years but either bottled it or fell out with each other over the years. He came in and got them all pulling in the right direction. This Offaly manager will be the last one for a while that will have plenty of decent hurlers at his disposal. A good fitness guy would make a hell of a difference to them.
Ken Hogan is another obvious candidate. Eddie Brennan is another name that keeps getting mentioned.
Seemingly it will be announced over the next few days

Good point. The Offaly players are very obviously the least fit of the top counties. It was great gas in Johnny Pilkingtons day,but the game has moved on.

Jack Sheedy ratified in Longford

As in the ex Dub?

Yes, the former Dublin footballer as opposed to any of the other three Jack Sheedys on the managerial merry-go- round.

Has he managed anywhere before?

Won at least one county title with Moorefield in Kildare.

Also I think he managed Lucan Sarsfields who he played with

2nd most random appointment in Leinster this year

Longford should have the basis of a solid team? Have had decent minor and under 21 teams in recent times

The stern-faced Tomas O Flatharta ratified as Laois football manager.

Any Leinster counties still without a manager for next season still?

Offaly hurlers

His selectors will be Fergal Byron and Noel Garvan. Confirming what a source in Limerick revealed to me recently, his coach will be the well respected Kerryman, Jerome Stack.

Hard to see Laois not making an All Ireland final in the next 2-3 years.

I never knew that Br Philip was the Laois hurling coach

He’s been involved with Laois on and off for years now. Cheddar added him to the senior ticket this year.

Derek McGrath to be the new Waterford manager with a back room team to include Big Dan and Tipperarys William Maher.

whats Garvan doing these day?..i remember a few years back he was involved in setting up some type of specialised training gym…did it take off in the end?

Invovled in Health and Fitness alright, not sure where, thought I’d heard Castlecomer mentioned before. He’s been involved underage coaching with some Laois sides and lead Josephs U21’s to a county title in the last couple of years.

DEREK MCGRATH IS expected to be officially unveiled as the new Waterford senior hurling manager tonight.
A press conference has been called by Waterford GAA chiefs for Lawlor’s Hotel in Dungarvan, at which the announcement is expected to be officially made.
McGrath is set to get the nod ahead of Peter Queally in the race to succeed Michael Ryan as Deise boss.
McGrath has experience as the manager of De La Salle’s All-Ireland winning colleges sides in 2007 and 2008, while he also managed the De La Salle club to win last year’s Waterford senior hurling title.
A star-studded backroom team has been assembled by McGrath with Waterford hurling hero Dan Shanahan and last year’s Tipperary All-Ireland minor boss William Maher set to become selectors.
Cork native Frank Flannery is set to become a coach alongside McGrath. Flannery has previously coached the Cork IT Fitzgibbon Cup team and the Cork minor hurlers while earlier this year he guided Cork club Milford to the All-Ireland senior camogie title.
It is also understood that highly rated sport psychologist Caroline Currid will also work with the Waterford team next year if McGrath is manager.
Currid assisted the Tipperary senior hurlers in 2010 when they won the All-Ireland and the Sligo native was also involved in All-Ireland SFC successes with Tyrone and Dublin in recent times.

Sounds like a good management team all roundz Reaction Fagan?
