Jim McGuinness: How I would reinvigorate football championship
Provincial championships and league should be integrated into two-tiered competition

You’re expecting all of the matches played over the past decade to be the greatest matches ever played?
I never said that
Fuck Larry McCarthy, even when I thought he was a yank I knew he was a Cork Cunt
What’s your point, so?
Dublin v Kerry 2013, 2016, 2019, Dublin v Mayo 2017, Dublin v Donegal 2014, Kerry v Mayo 2014 and 2017, these are the greatest matches ever played.
Ulster in 2021 produced four blockbusters of a magnificent standard in Donegal v Derry, Monaghan v Armagh, Tyrone v Donegal and Tyrone v Monaghan.
Derry under Rory Gallagher show that if a county wants to get competitive, it will.
Too many people in the GAA feel they’re somehow entitled to something. They’re not.
A big problem for the Championship for 20 years now is how awful traditional and populous powerhouses like Galway, Down and Meath have been. Same applies to Cork over the last decade. Kildare a county that really should be at the top table as well, then again that’s only ever happened sporadically in Kildare over the last 90 years of so.
The pity is they didn’t put forward a better proposal and we’ve an absolute shite championship to look forward to again next year bar the semis and final .
Am I correct in saying we’re back to 2001-2017 structure for next year?

Without a doubt.
However in Leinster Dublin are showing strong signs of coming back to the pack and Meath are showing signs of life. You always feel that Kildare should be doing better.
Meath have paid far too much respect to Dublin over the last few years but maybe they won’t after playing Dublin off the pitch in the second half of this year’s Leinster semi-final.
If Meath and Kildare were performing to their potential Leinster would be an excellent championship.
As I have been saying for a long time, the League system has played into the hands of those counties who have managed to establish themselves in Division 1 and screwed the rest.
Returning to the Divisions 1A/1B/2A/2B League format is a prerequisite to revive competitiveness across the board. Bring the Dublins and Kerrys and Mayos down a notch in terms of the standard they’re used to and simultaneously bring the rest up a couple of notches.
Every county in Division 2 is thus one good season away from Division 1 football.

I think technically it’s the 2007 format when the worst eight teams in the NFL were not admitted to the qualifiers?
I know when Dublin beat Offaly in the 2007 Leinster semi-final that meant Offaly were out of the championship.
The odds of another straight knockout championship in 2022 are shortening by the day.
Meath, Galway and Cork all have big populations and big tradition. Whatever about Dublin, there’s no reason whatsoever that they can’t be competitive with the likes of Mayo and Tyrone

Micko’s fine Wicklow team were severely blackguarded by that rule in 2007 and 2008. Good enough to win a Tommy Murphy cup and beat Kildare in Leinster but not allowed into the qualifiers. Then in 2009 when access was permitted for all they went as far as the 4th round of the qualifiers. Probably their greatest ever achievement in championship football. Who knows what they could have done in 07’ and 08’ as well.
They were certs next year regardless of format.
exactly , no format change will rectify that situ
You’re never going to do away with provincial championships or downgrade them to the extent that was on the table in Proposal B. That’s the counties and provincial councils ceding nearly all their power to Croke Park.
The Super 8’s were just awful and leagues by their nature in any sport are fairly dull for most of the teams and supporters involved as the die is cast fairly quickly as to who is advancing and competing for the top prize.
There is the element as well that every county should theoretically have a shot at winning the big pot every year. A bit like the FA Cup, where just about every senior club in the land gets a crack at it or the Open or US Open in golf where every Tin Cup golfer has a chance of winning it. The fact that only 10 or 11 of 32 had a shot at it under Proposal B, I’d imagine didn’t sit well.
Maybe some sort of format where you have two tiered competitions of 16. Start out with provincial championships which are seeded based on league positions, primarily really to avoid lopsided draw in Ulster. Provincial semi finalists all into Top 16 or some sort of variant of a guaranteed 3 from each province and play offs amongst beaten semi finalists, which could result in greater numbers for Ulster.
You could pretty much handpick most of the counties that will be makingTop 16 based on population and tradition - Dublin, Kerry, Tyrone, Mayo, Donegal, Galway, Cork, Meath, Kildare, Down (would want to buck up a bit) - then almost perennial over achievers with small populations like Monaghan and Roscommon. 3 or 4 places in play based on fluctuating standards elsewhere.
Dr McKenna Cup, O’Byrne Cup and the like should be scrapped. Having 3 competitions in a condensed calendar is too much.
Provincial championships and league should be integrated into two-tiered competition
That’s a good one from a few years back. Something for everyone. Links league and championship, keeps provincial link, loads of knock out games and two tiers.
I am sick to my back teeth about discussion on formats and whining about the weaker counties getting a raw deal
As things stand, Look the weaker counties ( div 3 and div 4 ) get a shot at Sam Maguire via the provincal championship and qualifiers. That is reasonable. They then have a shot at the tailteann cup where counties will be of their own standard if the top tier has proven too hot for them
In the league, they play counties of their own standard. Isnt everything covered there really?
The main issue is that the weaker counties didnt embrace the Tailteann Cup format when it was the Tommy Murphy Cup, they gave 2 fingers to it. Why doesnt anyone ever mention this?
also, counties like cork, kildare, meath are ridiciously underachieving allowing Kerry and Dublin to dominate provinces. This is not a format issue. It is down to the counties themselves, granted they are getting stronger underage
Does anybody know the detail of this proposal? Something to do with making the All Ireland champioship a league based competition?
What are the pros and cons?
Fuck it, the Tailteann cup could work, but they need to promote the fuck out of it, and play the final in Croke Park on the All Ireland weekend. Personally I’d get rid of the minors, not the same since it went u-17
So if Kildare and Meath improve we will have a good Leinster chanpionship? Still only a 3 team championship.
