I think the opposite mate. I think waterford are very dangerous first day out particularly. They have nothing to lose and Thurles always suited them.
This time last year they were viewed as the 2nd best team in the country. De Burca is back.
Mikey Kiely, the Dalys, Calum Lyons, Hutchinson etc - theyâre a threat.
There will surely also be a kick from Davy in his first year. He always burns his bridges in the 3rd year, but he does generally improve teams initially.
Iâd say Davy will park the bus, the kitchen sink, and Dessie Hutchinson in front of the goals. Itâll be a low scoring affair with Diarmuid Byrneâs scoring 7 points with all the space he gets
Waterford hurling didnât emerge from its slumber until 1998. Cork hurling was in a big trough at that stage, theyâd been humiliated at home by Limerick the previous year by about 16 points or something. That game against Clare was the start of them emerging from it.
Tipp v Limerick got 49k that year. 55k attended the Leinster final, and there were nearly as many at the Leinster semi-finals. Tipp v Wexford got 62k.
I was reading there that Davy has ruled Austin Gleeson, Iarlaith Daly and Shane McNulty out of the Limerick match. Thatâs pretty encouraging from a Waterford perspective. Waterford should be resting their entire first choice team for their real crunch match a week later against Cork.
He couldnât possibly seriously be considering Hutchinson for a worker role. Iâd say weâve seen nothing in the league of what he is thinking. But Iâd imagine it will be along the same lines he always does. Numbers back and a couple of lads inside to scrap it out on their own. Limerick will be okay with that. Theyâll go long range shooting.
If they can put up a decent show I would imagine theyâll take out a few scalps. I just donât think what Davy normally does will suit v Limerick.
Hayes, Hannon, Byrneâs and Nash will all kill them from range. Hego will come deep and fire over a few as well. Limerick are more or less designed to beat that system.
Youâve to push right up on Limerick imo.
