Thatâs a terrible idea. Nobody wants a big break in the middle of the season. As it is at the moment, club players have all of May and most of June for holidays. You canât base your season around a few, not even that many, young lads going off to America for a few months
Seems to be a very high correlation between between the lack of interest in the hurling final and the fact Day 4 of The Open Championship falls at the same time.
Of course that was never the case before
This new split season calendar has been an utter disaster for the Carlow Senior Hurling Championship (running from Mid June to early August). The two best hurlers in the county Mouse Kavanagh (St Mullins) and Chris Nolan (Mount Leinster Rangers) are hurling in the States for the summer and all 6 teams have been heavily depleted by absent players over the first 3 rounds.
Carlow, Iâm sure is not alone on this. In Waterford, the senior hurling Championship starts in a fortnight, thatâs 10 weeks after Waterford concluded their championship campaign against Clare on 22 May. Thereâs a round Robin series of games for the 12 teams with four group winners going into quarters, nobody eliminated, other 8 play off for 4 knock out places and no knock out until last weekend in August. Mostly to accommodate the exodus of inter-county players abroad for the summer.
Thatâs how split season in its current guise and calendar is playing out in the ground.
Thereâs 10 lads in the whole of Waterford playing GAA in America this summer. 2 in the whole of Carlow. You want to run a championship for the benefit of 2 people
The simple fact is in the next 10 to 15 years the
Split season will finish many clubs and itâll see club gaa go the way of junior soccer and club rugby.
Clubs will fold all over the country and the people who supported the split season will have the blood on their hands.
Of course because are selfish as long as they happy with their lot they donât care for the greater good.
Or pensioners. They should be delighted they donât have Sky and havenât been inflicted with the absolute dross served up in the inter-county championships this year. There have only been two decent games across both codes - Kilkenny v Wexford in hurling and Wexford v Offaly in football.
A minute ago you were advocating club players go on holidays in May and June and tough luck on any club players who have kids in school. Just like it was tough luck from you to the U20 county players back in May who were playing matches on Monday and Tuesday nights back in May, the night before end of year university exams.
Thats a scheduling issue. No reason those games canât be on weekends.
The Carlow County Board should hire you in a consultancy role to tell them they canât play the club championship because 2 (two) lads are gone to America
