Good to know.
We are not dead yet. Hard to read what effect the 2 games will have had on us… if you gave me a choice of coming in cold against Tipp or coming in warm and wounded after a war with KK… I’d pick the latter every time.
Fucking hell, Loughnane has absolutely slaughtered Canning again today in that rag tabloid he writes for.
“Most knowledgeable hurling people now agree that Joe Canning has been destroyed by the media, who constantly over-emphasise his contribution to games.”
“They are well on the way to making Joe Canning the Billy Beane of hurling. Plenty of talent, but not a real player.”
“As of yet Canning does not bear comparison with his contemporaries TJ Reid and Richie Hogan, never mind true greats Henry Shefflin, JJ Delaney and Tommy Walsh.”
"He has none of the work-rate, heart or mental toughness of any of the Kilkenny greats. But the media are fascinated by him, constantly proclaiming his genius."

A more cynical man would say Ger was up to something

Typical knee jerk analysis from Loughnane.
The 2012 free to level the All Ireland was an admirable display of mental strength I thought.
Very harsh by Loughnane, he really loves to stick the boot into Galway, his own comment highlights a big flaw in his argument;
“…never mind true great Henry Shefflin, JJ Delaney and Tommy Walsh”.
He fails to point out that all of the above players played in the same team amongst other great players. Galway haven’t had one other player in Canning’s career that has consistently performed anywhere near the levels that the above players have
A lot of older bucks seem to get very worked up over the extent of Canning’s ‘greatness’. Fran’s right, Galway have not been particularly strong during Joe’s time but any season where they have looked good he’s been to the forefront for them.

I’ve said it before, Loughnane has had a petty gripe against Canning since Canning declined to join the Galway panel while Ger was in charge. His attacks are completely unjustified and are small, petty and vindictive of Loughnane, which is a shame as I generally like him.
Loughnane further likes to attack Galway in general, its his way of blaming Galway and Galway players for his failure as Galway manager. The more his attacks are believed the less responsibility he will ever have to take for the utter fuck of a job he did there.
He is bitter Canning wouldn’t play for him, and he is bitter that he was a complete failure as a manager in Galway. He should have the good grace to shut his mouth or temper his comments to some level of objectivity.

But not in his first year. Didn’t he make some comments at the time along the lines of ‘he wouldn’t be ready for senior hurling anyway’ after he had invited him into the panel?
Fuck knows what Loughnanes motives are… wouldn’t suprise me if he was trying motivate Canning into destroying Tipp.
Being honest, If I was Canning I’d nearly pack it all in and get on with my life.
He went to the edge of the square for the last 10 minutes on Sunday… 3 different Galway players had him as an option as they advanced forward. All blazed the ball wayward. What the fuck could Canning do about that?

I don’t understand why Galway went from more purposeful carrying and distribution of the ball in early 2012 to the uber direct no-look striking that they pursue now. Did Cunningham lose faith in what he was doing initially or what happened?
Attack is OTT. But canning was shite last sat. Nowhere is the first half, got 2 balls into his hand and threw himself to the gnd with both in an effort to win frees. He did have one of those awarded and he also cut over a sideline ball. That was his sum total in contribution , he did not receive any special attention wrt marking etc. he was very disappointing . It didn’t matter if Galway hit high ball to him Sat, if the did JJ would have spoiled it and Tyrell would have cleared it. He has been over hyped buts that’s not his fault
Not sure WTB… you can forget 2013, there was so much messing in the camp that it was a right off. This year Helebert and Kenny are gone so its possible that Cloonan and Curley are bringing their own spin.
I always considered Cunningham as an admin and delegate type guy… So he may be leaving the game plan to the new folk.
I think plan B might need to worked on if plan A gets us past Tipp.
That was 07 Glas not long after Loughrea tried to decapitate him in a county final, Loughnane said he thought the Cannings had gone on a ‘world tour’. He played in 08 along with his brother Ollie. Galway did ok in 07 without him, only Eddie Brennan proved the difference in an epic struggle with Kilkenny in Croke Park, maybe Ger is wondering what might have been if Joe was there.
I always found it Interesting that the year galway played the best in the championship under AC, canning was missing for nearly all of the league, so they had to play properly, and they then got a very quick run through to the final.
Personally, I would play canning at midfield and have done with it.
