The extruding bit around Terenure was formerly Dublin South Central. Apparently Labourâs Eric Byrne did quite well here. Could benefit Humpheys in the new constituency but conversely damage Byrne.
There must be a real pallor of gloom across the country of Wexford with the retirement of political colossus Deputy Browne. Hopefully the exhausting process of finding someone to fill those boots will yield a worthy successor. Will Ger Carthy or Mythen eat into Howlinâs vote at all?
Eoghan Murphy is a son of Henry Murphy S.C. and a grandson of Gay Byrneâs former financial guru Russell Murphy. Very much south Dublin Fine Gael blueboods. Enda is from the country & wetern/big farmer type end of the party. Those two factions generally donât get along.
Deputy Browneâs son James is on the Fianna FĂĄil ticket so Enniscorthy might still have a Browne in the DĂĄil. Thereâs likely to be 1 seat for them in the county and heâs competing with party colleagues Malcolm Byrne (Gorey) and Aoife Byrne (New Ross, daughter of Hugh). I think heâs got the best chance out of those three.
Yes, I was aware that both Browne and Byrne scions were running.
Will the Gorey card be of assistance to Malcolm? No TD in the north of the county and the only real rival there is DâArcy who has never been the biggest of vote getters. Who and where is Julia Hogan from?
Russell Murphy swindled both Hugh Leonard and Gaybo. Took Hugh for 1/4 million and Gaybo for 150k which was a lot back in the day. His friendship with Sunday Press Beauty columnist Bronwyn Conroy was often commented upon at the time as well.
Thanks Choccy. Iâve contacted the local Post Office and they have the form there. Will fill it out and send it off. Donât want to have to go back out and vote in Cork East if I donât have to.
Sheâs from Saltmills in the south of the county but lives in Wexford town. I think she was added by party HQ as a nod to gender quotas but I doubt sheâll feature.
Hard to tell with Gorey and how it will assist Malcolm. I know party colleagues carved up the county in the past but not sure if anything has been agreed this time. I think Byrne and DâArcy are the only two candidates from the north of the county with any chance. I reckon DâArcy is more likely to take the departing Liam Twomeyâs seat than Byrne taking one for FF here.
Apparently Russellâs sons paid back some of the money their old lad had half inched. I used to work with one of the sons and you couldnât meet a nicer chap
Iâm not sure, pal. Sheâs been active in a non-party* organisation/pressure group set up to complain about the severe shortage of Wexford town secondary school places.
*possibly being fronted by FF sympathetic types and being used to attack the government.
Most of the FF vote in Gorey last time around went to Wallace apparently. Those who lost faith in FF voted for him rather than voting for the enemy of Darcy / FG. Malcolm has been doing the ground work for 2-3 years now and really fought to be added to the ticket despite the party trying to push him out. I can see him getting the local FF vote along with a local vote from people with no party allegiance as North Wexford want a TD. Whether that is enough I donât know but he should get a lot of transfers from North Wexford too once heâs not eliminated too early and this could give him a strong position.
If he does get elected Iâd predict heâll leave FF within 12 months and work as an independent TD.
@GeoffreyBoycott, @Fagan_ODowd, @Tim_Riggins et al, would there be many proddy bastards up for election? I maybe naively didnât realise that the likes of the late Brian Lenihan was a proddy. Would the likes of FF and FG be riddled with proddies?
