When did @Matty_Hislop become such a cantankerous old cunt? He was much more placid as @Sandymount_Red
He was in his fuck.
The general election does it to me. I donât think I can take another 3 weeks or whatever driving around seeing Kevin fucking Humpreyâs smug mush on every second lamppost.
Iâve got no problem with people out campaigning and knocking on doors. But this blanket posting on every fucking lamppost is a national disgrace and should be outlawed.
Its a boom time for lads on here making flyers mate, have a heart.
Fair enough. Id love that too. Itâs an utter pain in the hole putting them up. Unfortunately they work.
My west Limerick town had only posters for two candidates on it, Collins and OâBrien. OâBrien seems to be going balls out for this election. I counted 26 items (flags and posters) of his on telephone polls as I drove through the town last night. Collins had about 10.
Is there any hard evidence to back this up? Or is it just oneupmanship?
Marty McGuinness is a magnet for attracting big business from the states.
Weâre also the only All Ireland republican party. Our members have active service with the RA. They know about putting the greater good ahead of themselves.
Yes there is. Itâs about recognition. Youâll never go into the booth and vote for the fella you never heard of.
Wasnât it some town council brought in a bye-law restricting the amount of posters any one candidate could put up within itâs boundary. It sounded like a very sensible idea.
Do they, though, or are they a relic from a bygone era where facial recognition was important in a time when information on candidates wasnât so readily available?
Surely, any discerning voter is perfectly capable of finding where each candidates stands on issues. All local media do in-depth candidate profiles and thereâs the world of online blogs, commentaries, profiles etc, out there.
Iâve never voted for somebody based on a poster and I think itâs unlikely that many do. In fact, it could have an adverse effect on a candidate as moaning about posters has become a feature of recent campaigns.
They donât particularly bother me, I just find them irrelevant and ignore them.
Youâd be suprised Iâd say.
There was some fella on radio one the other day who said your chances of voting for someone rise exponentially if they call to your house.
I met an old fella after the last general election who said he voted for x candidate cos he was the only one who bothered to call into his house.
I agree regarding calling to your house. At least then you have the opportunity to engage with them personally. The personal canvass is still, by far and away, the most effective form of electioneering.
My point is that I donât believe cluttering the place with posters serves any truly useful purpose.
I love the election posters. They add great colour and excitement.
If they were banned youâd have people going around complaining that youâd hardly know there was an election on.
Do ye actually engage with canvassers?
Yatexy called Kildare North today.

Will Emmett make it? Factor in that Dan Neville is retiring and that Limerick is FF country, not natural 2-seat FG, plus the fact that FF havenât given Collins a runningmate and you have all the ingredients for an upset.
It was natural FF in the old days of Gerry Collins. He would bring the second in on transfers. Itâs up for grabs now.
Will you be taking down the plastic tags too or will you just be ripping down the posters and leaving the beautiful lampposts of Fingal riddled with plastic tags?
