Gigs coming up

I donā€™t think American arena rock of the 70s and 80s would be my specialist subject, to be honest

I had moved on from the hair metal scene by the time these songs came out.

Or your hair had moved on

Iā€™ll be in Limerick the night he plays there so hopefully will catch that or one of the Dublin shows. 23 years since he last played Limerick.

Itā€™s safe to say that I preferred his earlier stuff.

Safe but not unexpected

I donā€™t like any of his stuff. I bought one of his albums 20-25 years ago and I hated it.

His first album was in 1993.

He had a run then until 1999 and his arguably best known album I See A Darkness.

I lost him after that.

His early stuff was very strange and disturbing. Just my cup of tea.

The four Palace Bros/Palace Music albums are excellent.

Itā€™s like nothing youā€™ll ever hear. Hard to put it into a category really. Some of his songs around that time are as good as I have ever heard.

He was mates with the Slint lads of course. From Louisville Kentucky. Most of them played on his early albums.

Yep. He took the cover photo for Spiderland (his dad took the photo for the cover of Tweez)

I posted some photos that were online from his early Irish shows here before. Britt Walford and David Pajo were in his backing band on that tour.

My brothers saw him live back around that time and said that he sang most of his stuff arseways. Steve Albini who produced two of his albums said he was very much off the cuff musician with little rehearsals and just record on the day. Suited Albini down to the ground of course.

Christ but Spiderland is a brilliant album.

One of my favourites of all time.

Favourite track?

This one for me. You can feel the jumpyness and paranoia.

Nice choice.

Iā€™d probably go ā€˜ā€¦ Captainā€™ all in but ā€˜Breadcrumb Trailā€™ is some way to start an album. ā€˜Washerā€™ a great way to kick off side 2. Ah sure, thereā€™s nothing throwaway on that record.

Washer is one of the saddest songs I know, considering that poor McMahan was going through shit at the time.

I think I see a darkness was the one I bought. I might have a listen to it again. I might have been too young for it then.
