I had a spot of champagne afternoon tea on the top floor of that very tall hotel/place/building - Burj Al something or other.
Does your mate live there? Surely he knows a few spots.
If not, the Marina area is nice enough. Around the Eggspectation cafe etc.
Oh and you might get a spot of the Kinehans going about their daily business if you are lucky.

Have a look at MOTIONGATE⢠Dubai Theme Park | Where Rides and Movies Come Together if youâre interested in theme parks. Thereâs a LegoLand as part of it that I think has a water park now too. Crowds and queues usually fairly small during the day because of the heat. Mainly just school tours.
