Holiday destinations for the accompanied traveller

I’ve been a qualified driver for all of three years last January. I’ve driven up and down the country many times in that space of time. I can’t see myself driving the same road as them mad bastards.

Sorrento is over an hour from Naples by train. Well worth a trip. You can get a boat to Capri from down at the cruise port. Also worth a trip. Personally I wouldn’t go to Naples without going to Pompeii. I thought it was one of the most amazing things I’ve seen but in the style of @Mac you’ll get the ā€œoh you’ve been to Pompeii, you should really see Herculaneum, it’s much betterā€. Naples is a port city with a gritty reputation but its grand and you’ll have to try the pizza.

I lf you are going to Capri in a day trip - try to do a late evening trip. Middle of the day is mad busy.
As @Fagan_ODowd says you have to do Pompeii.

Good man!!

If you’ve a car and are feeling hungry, the Pa amb oli in a place called S’Hostal in Montuiri is top notch.

Robbing from shops was absolutely huge when we were young lads too at one stage. Nearly every trip away with school or club teams would have fellas who would fleece freezers for ice creams etc. Bit mad really wonder does it still go on.

We cleaned out the gift shops in Knock one year in secondary school. Coming home with 5 Virgin Mary water bottles and 6 church fridge magnets wasn’t the successful haul we expected.

The Italian rail network is top class. You could go anywhere in a few hours.

Florence only three hours by train and one of the great cities in the world.

It’s insane. Just a constant push forwards

Its both beautiful and a shithole

I’ve driven in Italy and found it fine. I suppose if you only ever drive in a rural back water it might be challenging but if you drive in a city like Dublin every day it’s really no big deal.

Driving in a foreign country really gives you a greater perspective, view and experience. I love it.

Oofftt

Italy has a sneaky tourist tax. If you drive into what they deem a ā€˜historic area’, you get hit with a fine. I’m guessing your number plate gets read by a machine, and they get your deets from the rental company. About 9 months or a year after my Italian roadtrip, I got a bill for 800 euro in the post. Statute of limitations is 5yrs or something, so I said fuck it, as I was in a ā€˜fuck-everything’ sort of mndframe at the time. Downside is, I may be refused service at that family of rental companies in the future.
