Holiday destinations for the lone traveller
I enjoyed Prague but it’s full of fucking stags, I’m told* Bratislava is like Prague was before the stags.

*Some article I read online
Not really. It is much much smaller than Prague and not as grand. But it is Only 45 mins by car from Vienna. Literally you would see everything in a half day. Ok if you want it as a base for Vienna. Vienna is lovely but the locals are racist cunts. Budapest is fine, bigger scale and more to see. Reckon you are better off going to Sardinia.

Agree with all that

It’s God’s country mate. You have to see it to believe. Big sky country. You will do a lot of driving to cover ground up there though.

Anyone been to Lithuania as a holiday destination? Saw something about it having nice beaches etc but undeveloped as a tourist destination yet.

Was in Vilnius years ago in the winter. Not too hectic. You can probably see the Russian navy from the beaches there. Riga probably nicer.

Finally went and booked a trip to Morrocco, three nights in Marrakesh and 4 nights in Agidir in October

Only seeing this now pal. I didn’t think it was pricey.
Some of the hotels with private beaches can be very expensive.
We stayed outside Alghero, 10 mins by bus (€1 each way, chislers free) Food was very reasonable, loads of restaurants in the old town, for all budgets.

Agadir is fairly shit mate but there’s some cool enough tours you can do out around the region.

It’s looking like I’ll have a c.21-25 day longer holiday opportunity in August so looking at the possibility of going further afield than my usual haunts of home to the US or somewhere in Europe.

Probably need to be booking something soon as I’ll need tablets and/or injections from a doctor if I end up going to South America or Australia or somewhere.

I kinda wanted to go South America but not sure the climate in August suits Argentina and Chile. I was more interested in hanging out in posh restaurants in places like Buenos Aires than boating up the Amazon or walking the Inca Trail like a scruffy gimp “on a year out after college”. It seems places near the equator would be more suitable in August like Bolivia, Peru and Colombia. Any recommendations or insight to offer based on my preferences and what it’ll be like over there in August?

If South America doesn’t work then I’ll have to consider my options. South Africa would be winter too. Not sure about Asia - I like the idea of going to Japan a bit. New Zealand is a no no. Where else is an option in a far flung land, guys? Don’t mind spending a week here, a week there, a week somewhere else kinda thing. Just think it’s a good chance to sample something different than a couple of weeks in Spain or Portugal.

Help. Discuss.

Do a driving holiday in the states pal, how much of it have you seen?

As @maroonandwhite has suggested - a driving holiday to the states is what you’re looking for.

I’ve just returned from a holiday in the U.S. and Canada. Clocked up about 1,000 miles of driving in a week. Essentially did a big lap around Lake Ontario hitting Toronto, Montreal, Niagara, Lake George and Burlington. Beautiful part of the world.

If I can get enough time off I’d like to drive from Chicago to Seattle (or Seattle to Chicago). Would be a lovely drive through Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana and Idaho. That’s around 2,000 miles. Two weeks would be plenty for it.

Thanks, pals. But America is 2016 - a chum’s wedding in California and will do a driving* holiday around it. Need more 2015 suggestions.

*I drove from Wexford town to Rosslare Strand and back on Sunday morning.

@Bandage there is a wonderful Peter King article from 1990 on the MMQM site of sports illustrated at the moment where he travelled with John Madden on his private coach from LA to New York.

It may well wet the appetite for 2016

Since you want to sit in nice reataurants Peru and Bolivia are out. And since you don’t want to walk anywhere or get sweaty or go into jungles or see sights or experience culture or anything like that then it’s hardly worth your while going to Colombia either. Have you considered Monte Carlo?

Would you feel confident about driving on this trip? On probably the right hand side of the road?

South America is a big place pal, so if you are only spending a week or 2 going, then you’d be better off nailing down specific regions or countries and focus on that.Argentina would probably suit you best, the more westernised country in South America, so you wont have to deal with the usual riff raff of the other poorer inca based countries in the west and central south America. Spring time is approaching, so weather would be good. It was Autumn when I was there, and the weather was great throughout. As for what to do,you could start in Buenos Aires, head south to the Tierra del Fuega national park, then across to the glaciers, up to Bariloche, then on to Mendoza, over to Salta, then onto Iguazu and the waterfalls, and round down to BA to finish off. But if you just want to prick around and do fuck all and take it handy, a week or 2 in BA could be enough for you, and go to the few bits and pieces around there. Cementerio de la Recoleta, San Telmo, the national museum, and obviously La Boca and into La Bombenera. Shit loads of other things to do too. But if it were me, I’d be spending longer than a couple of weeks, and would hit Chile, Bolivia and Peru as well. Lots of good food in BA, and as long as you like your steaks, you’ll be fine.

Thanks, @Gman.

It’d be a 21-25 day holiday all told but I meant within that I wouldn’t mind spending a week in a few different places in the region. Apologies if this was unclear in my initial post.

Would it not be freezing in Buenos Aires in early August? I’m also interested in Santiago but it seems really cold at the Copa America. Do I need to be considering countries closer to the equator at this time of year?

Has anyone ever done safari in Kenya followed by beach and relaxation in Zanzibar?

I’m not sure what the weather is like in August but you could shoot down the coast of Brasil, from Rio to Florianopolis over 10 days… there’s a couple of really nice islands on the route also. If there were cheap flight i’d then fly down to Buenos Aires for 3 nights, get a game of football, enjoy the night life and head back to rio for another 3 nights to finish off. Those flights might bump up your costs but if you book ahead you might get flights from BA to Rio for €120… Alternatively you could see if it costs much more to fly in to Rio and home from BA which would give you a few more days to explore a little bit of Argentina, Cordoba is only a few hours away and a lovely town. It depends on what you want tho, pal. The later into the summer the better the weather over there, if you could push it into the first week or two of September, even better. But Brasil will throw up some lovely beach time while Buenos Aires will have the night life, food, shopping and Boca Juniors!

Thanks to @Bandage, @Balbec & @Little_Lord_Fauntleroy for advice

We have booked for 10 days 5 miles outside Follonica, have half a plan to get the fast train to/from Rome for a two day visit and a full plan to spend the last 4 days up round Viareggio but yet to book the accommodation.
