The pre clearance thing used to be such a time saver but airport procedures are a bit smarter now. I had to wait 2 and a half hours one time for a fellow traveller trying to get through the clearance desks at O’Hare.
I flew to Newark via Oslo a few weeks back. I landed at 1:05 pm and was out the other side of security/customs/baggage claim by 2pm. The airport was busy but as you say they have it fairly well set up these days
It is quite intelligently done now at all the major international airports. I think even Dublin does it. It seems to profile people when they scan their passport in and select people at random/risk for extra attention, rather than allow a few border officials do it which slows it right down.
I’m heading over to Napa Valley next Monday. I have a four day committment and am free then for about 8 days. I was thinking of a bit of a road trip, taking in Yosemite or Lake Tahoe. Any advice on this or alternatives? I have already been to San Diego, LA & SF.
Yosemite is a must for a few days but will be absolutely thronged as schools just finished. Stay in a nearby town like Groveland or Mariposa, most hotels have a shuttle into the park. Monterey/Carmel is worth a visit and down to Big Sur if you have time. As far as wine country, I actually prefer Sonoma to Napa, Sonoma itself is a lovely town and the wineries tend to be a little less crowded and better value than Napa. Calistoga up at the top of Napa valley is worth a visit as is the Silverado trail which has some great wineries (Miner, Stags Leap, Chimney Rock, etc.).
Granada would be a good spot for a lone traveller too. About an hour or so from Malaga. No numpty scumbag tourists on the lash. Cheap. Tapas are free, and it’s a beautiful city. Might be way too hot at the height of the summer, but worth a trip.
