I personally sympathise fairly heavily with rural communities, but I’ve found the RISE campaign to be an absolute farce. They’ve yet to offer any even remotely convincing argument as to the ‘threat’ to rural Ireland. And on that count, their arrogance in assuming they are representing anything more than a minority of people who engage in these pursuits has been breathtaking.

Ultimately, the weakness in their arguments is best illustrated by their increasing personal attacks on members of the Green Party, and their backward, ignorant characterizations of the people who support them.

you’ve unwittingly hit the nail on the head.

the 31k figure quoted above is based on the legal no. of deer culled, a process which involves, among other things, the signature of the minister of the environment.
if that’s the legal no, what’s the illegal no. of deer culled? (and how many of them are down to Link?)

gormley has yet to address this, and until he does, his act of banning the staged hunt of a stag picked from the ward union herd (and subsequently released back to the herd, assuming the hunt is successful) will be open to claims such as SS** made, that this bill is mere window dressing, a sop to the more extreme wing of the party.

P.S. the “problem” exists because there are no real natural predators of deer in the country (drunk KK men excepted) since the wolf population died out
one other factor is that a large proportion of the irish deer population were introduced to the country, (presumably for hunting?) which distorts the figures

Both sets of stereotypes probably have some truth in them.

The point is though, that the pro-hunt crowd couldn’t defend the hunt on it’s own merits.

Possibly because they can’t defend it, or possibly because they thought slandering the greens and inventing a false ‘town vs country’ dichotomy would win them the support of people who ultimately, couldn’t give a fuck about hunting.

It’s as defensible as horse racing. The casualty rate is probably less than the sport of kings.

You say the pro hunt lobby couldn’t defend the hunt on its merits. The Greens couldn’t condemn it on its merits either. They added in this road safety bogus concern yet there’s no such concern for people hitting deer in the Phoenix Park.

Meelick and Parteen people are like the bloods and the crips. Clonlara people are too educated to talk to either of them.

The root of the issue here is the residence of the people who run Limerick in Cratloe. With Clonlara gone they will rule the rest of us with an iron fist.
