Hurling League 2014
Waterford looking good alright. Brickā€™s sending off looked harsh. McCormack got red for his usual tramping. Will be interesting to see how Waterford get on against Kilkenny and Clare.
As an aside, a word for the corner backsā€™ union. There were a ridiculous amount of steps being allowed these days. Mark Kelly for Kilkenny last week. Two of McGrathā€™s goals yesterday should have been disallowed. His first was a complete joke. He fouled his man and then ran about 11 steps. Patrick Horgan took a long stroll for one of his scores there on the highlights too. Its impossible to defend fairly if a lad takes that many steps.
Mark Kelly will have to watch the steps alright- I would see referees beginning to take note and maybe blowing him up which or whether , thatā€™s if he continues to get games. They are certainly giving him every chance to prove himself.
What do you make of the backs this year-debate emerging over Lester as Centre Back or wherever , I never saw Jackie doing the shouting he did yesterday, organising the full and half back lines towards the end of the second half

It was for me anyway buddy.

KK taking advantage of soft reffing again. Saw one of their new guys twice running through defences with the sliotar in his hand on Sunday. Step after step after step and then a few more. Why do they cheat all the time?

Iā€™m not sure about Lester at centre back. If Hogan can regain form Iā€™d go with him every time. We could field about 6 decent half back lines but still struggle in the full back line. You could make an argument that last few years full back line of Murphy, JJ and Jackie would all be better at half back. Murphy would be a fabulous centre back. Unfortunately, Kennedy seems to be the a better half back too. He is a great bit of stuff. A lovely hurler but better when a bit loose. Joyce is another fine hurler but he is awfully slow so I wouldnā€™t play him full back. Maybe centre back would suit him. Buckley and Holden have looked good too. I havenā€™t seen enough of Walsh at full back. He hasnā€™t done much wrong yet. If Walsh could nail down full back, JJ at corner back would be a good option I think with Murphy in the other corner.
Thereā€™s going to be one or two major casualties come championship time. Last yearā€™s team was crying out for pace up front. For all his faults, I thought Cody was wrong to drop Matthew Ruth against Cork. Ruth will hardly make it this year but it will be interesting to see who will lose out. Looks like a few of Larkin, Power, Tommy, Hogan, Rice, Joyce, Jackie, M Fennelly (if injuries persist) all in serious danger of missing out this year.

Where have you been? Referees have won us every game weā€™ve ever won.
All the rest of you poor shlubs have to do it honestly.
Suckers.

Waterford building a nice team. Lots of younglads who are only going to get better. Tadgh Bourke will be the best Under 21 in Ireland this year outside of Tony Kelly and will be the best hurler in Ireland by 2017.

Just watched Galway KK game there again.

Galway lack discipline, silly lazy frees, poor tackling, this stuff should be coached out of them at this stage you would think. Conor Cooney, Niall Healy and David Burke all culprits.

Shane Kav looked pedestrian at times yesteday and will need serious protection, moore would certainly strengthen things. Other backs were solid enough apart from Coen who looks limited in his role. Tannian needs to have better vision at 6 and stop wasting energy roaring out of defence, break the tackle and let it off.

David Burke doesnā€™t really deserve to be starting based on his performance yesteday. AC needs to bite bullet here.

Gearoid Mac has played his way into the top 20 and will push for a place very strongly. A pure nuisance for any defender.

Niall Burke seems to be our only player that van score from outside 50 yards.

Aidan Harte and Brehony did ok, a little loose though.

Tipp game will tell another story, we should be confident of beating them if we have any ambition for 2014 .

This has been on the cards for a while in my view. Callinan has been solid and wont be moved at this stage barring injury. Mattie Kennys departure didnā€™t bode well for Skehill either. Couple this with a few bad shoulder injuries and a long commute to work and I suppose he reckoned he is as well off getting on with his life.

TO be honest, the jury has been out on Skehill (and indeed AC) since he allowed himself to play in the 2012 AI replay. A selfish immature decision but one he shouldnā€™t have been allowed to make.

Anyway, the best of luck to him. He served his time and at the end of it all there is fuck all thanks for it.

True that.

An excellent keeper. I saw him up close playing for LIT a few times. I never saw anybody to command the square like he did. Great hands, everything. Best in the country as far as Iā€™m concerned.

An excellent keeper no doubt. Prone to howlers though though thatā€™s part of the package of being a Galway goalie seeminglyā€¦

Jesus we could do with him in KK. We havenā€™t a keeper that could save stamps. Anyone thatā€™s ever tried in goal appears to just stand there allowing the opposition acres of space and time to slot the ball into the net. We need someone that commands the full back line and square area and isnā€™t afraid to take on attackers when advancing on goal. For the last 10 years KK keepers could get away with it due to the players in front of them but that day is long gone. I fear for KK defensive record this season.

In Heritys defense heā€™s probably achieved in his intercounty career what most lads would be delighted with from their careers, a 6 pack and a fine girlfriend. His AI medal is only a bonus.

Who was doing the organising? Jackie or Lester? I wasnā€™t clear from your post.

An excellent keeper prone to howlers

Jackie - bellowing at Lester and the other half backs to get back in position and organising the full back line too. At one point Brian Kennedy made a run up the field and the ball was lost , I thought Jackieā€™s arms would snap off the gesticulating he was doing to get the cover back- 'twas TJ spotted the gap and went back.
Itā€™s interesting anyway watching the new players and players in different positions- wonder will there be another eight changes next weekendā€¦

By Galway standards

Skehill has bags of talent but you could never trust him not to have a brainfart. Callinan is a clear number 1. Our tackling and intensity is woeful so far, that will suit tipps flaky forwards and they will hammer us i fear.

HT: Dublin 1-16 Kilkenny 1-6. Anyone watching it? Iā€™m en route to Wexford so missing out.
