Hurling Team of the Century 2000 - 2022

Couple of weeks early for this shit. That’s usually reserved for around about December 29th when lads are draining the last of the whiskey bottle

That’s doing Nickie an awful disservice and very cheap analysis.

Pity Davy Fitzgerald couldn’t follow him when he was in Clare. He’d have been the most successful manager in the counties history

He did but there’s only so much even a cyborg can do

Don’t forget the knee taking….

  1. Nickie Quaid (combined Donal Ogs puckouts with exceptional shot stopping)
  2. Sean Finn
  3. Daithi Burke
  4. Tommy Walsh
  5. Paudie maher
  6. Jj Delaney
  7. Kyle Hayes
  8. Cian Lynch
  9. TK
  10. Henry
  11. Tj
  12. Joe Canning
  13. Eoin Kelly
  14. Callinan
  15. John Mullane

Ken McGrath the 16th man who could play in a host of positions.

SOD is better than mullane.
Ollie Canning should be in there also ahead of Finn (who is next best).

I don’t see what Hayes has done to be held in such high esteem as a half back.

Ultimately he was dominated twice by Deccie Dalton (who is no world beater) in 2024 and if Limerick had a shot to draw a game from 70 metres he wouldn’t be in there top 12 to hit it.

He’s a fine athlete but nowhere near the top half backs of this century as a hurler.

I’d have his comrades Hannon and Byrnes well ahead of him.

Tom Kenny at 9 is a good call, I know he preferred to wear 8 but it’s a minor detail :man_shrugging:

Finn is another….
Unquestionably a good hurler but he turns like a Bus. He plays in a system where he is protected and when the system breaks down he is vulnerable.

Canning played with a crowd of hams around him and still stood out. For that reason he’d be my pick at CB.

These teams are ridiculously tough to pick but i think there are 4 certain defenders you can’t leave out in Tommy Walsh, Canning, Padraic Maher and JJ Delaney.

After that it depends on how you want to move your chess pieces. Longevity might go against him but when he first broke on the scene around 2011 and 2012, Paul Murphy was absolutely unreal.

I’d probably go with:

  1. Daithi Burke/Finn/Paul Murphy
  2. Delaney
  3. Canning
  4. Walsh
  5. Hannon
  6. Padraic Maher

Agreed. I’d have Nicky at 6.

SOD taking 15 steps with the ball every time he gets the ball is something I personally hate, also some of his long range shooting has been mixed down through the years.

Ollie canning over Finn, I’d have no qualms about that tbh.

Put the head down and arms up - free every time

I like the team you’ve picked but did JJ ever play 6? He must have at some stage but I can’t recall him playing there. Ollie Canning non-negotiable for me. Hard to quibble with that front eight.

:joy::joy::joy:

It’s “the system”!
