Hurling Team of the Century 2000 - 2022

Finn, Hayes and Hegarty are the 3 Limerick lads a cut above the rest in my opinion. Lynch is great but those 3 lads can slot in anywhere on any team in any system and do wreck. Lynch, by the nature of his game relies heavily on others. The other 3 could hurl on a different planet and they’d still be as effective.

He didn’t exactly know what to do in the All Ireland Semi Final when he was standing under Cusack Stand by himself while his direct opponent was firing over Hollywood points under the Hogan.

My overall team would be something like this:

  1. Brendan Cummins
  2. Sean Finn
  3. JJ Delaney
  4. Ollie Canning
  5. Tommy Walsh
  6. Declan Hannon
  7. Padraic Maher
  8. Tony Kelly
  9. Brendan Maher
  10. Henry Shefflin
  11. Cian Lynch
  12. TJ Reid
  13. Patrick Horgan
  14. Seamus Callanan
  15. Joe Canning

Kilkenny 4
Tipp 4
Limerick 3
Galway 2
Clare 1
Cork 1

Kyle Hayes is the greatest hurler of all time. Any team without him on it will not be entertained.

I doubt anyone would have too many arguments with that

People picking stat padder Hoggy and not selecting Big Game Hego who has around 18-72 scored in All Ireland Finals is baffling.

Sorry I’ve just spotted Horgan. Out he goes for SOD.

David McInerney deserves to be in the conversation also

Whatever about the merits of Hoggy still getting a game for Cork, having him on a Team of the Century is laughable.
The chap would also do well to learn there is no I in Team.

Delaney only has one spot on that team and it’s at 7. Maher is the second best at his position this century.

It’s not the all stars

Delaney is the best full back of the era.

Bit of revisionism going on there on Sean Finn

A clamping

P Maher :joy:

Come on lads… make your wumming a little more subtle ffs.

Again, Finn ahead of Michael Kavanagh?

Not for me, a systems guy vs a decorated hurler like Mick?

Times have changed chief

You could swap JJ to either of the wings with Maher or even Kyle.
I wouldn’t change that team bar maybe Ollie canning, even if he was ahead of Finn This notion that Finn was playing in front of a brilliant system is a bit unjustified imo, he won 80% of the one on one duals during all those years.

The limericks can waffle & moan away but the facts are Finn was outstanding in a generational team where a system protected the FB line.

He has looked remarkably average in recent outings.

Look at Eoin Kelly, Canning & Mullane etc and their ability surrounded by mostly dross.

Different levels.

Teams are subjective.

I’ll only add that Finn wasn’t fully recovered from ACL last year.

Paudie Maher looked as comfortable in the video doing the rounds in the sidegroups this morning as he did with hunky David Breen running at him.
