Possibly. Itâs either that or a shift to socio-political systems that pay less attentions to religious divisions.
While that seems impossible to some people, the Arab Spring was by and large driven by young people who were demanding exactly that. Also, itâs not that long since the big âthreatâ in the region was secular Arab Nationalism as exemplified by Nasser, who the US & UK labelled âHitler on the Nileâ.
Part of the problem is that the US is reluctant to back the secular democratic movements such as those that emerged during the Arab spring because they are by definition difficult to control and because they also have a tendency to lean to the left. Iran wonât back them because they are secular. And Saudi Arabia wonât support them for the same reason. In the absence of democratic secular nationalism or some version of pan-arab socialism, itâs hard to imagine anything except a re-drawing of the map through military force being the future for the region.
