Ireland politics (Part 2)

Saving their electoral skins is one thing but not changing their spots in a definite.

@Cheasty has been telling us this for many months now.

But how can other countries reduce prices of things like electricity and petrol but we cant? Why are we paying double the prices for lots of food and drink items? @Tim_Riggins would have you believe we live in paradise and slates spain who were able to reduce petrol prices to help peopleā€¦ Our goal seems to be profit at all costsā€¦

I got a large bottle of Jemeson brought back from my beloved Spain recently for the cost of 12 euro. Itā€™s 30-40 notes here. OUTRAGEOUS

Petrol in Spain is about 2.05 a litre from the few stations I have seen.

Must be a ploy to rip off you brits on holidays. There fuel and energy reductions are well outlined

2.08 on 4th July

Whatā€™s it here? I saw 2.16 yesterday

Iā€™d say 2.20 is average

Half of it is tax so they can do a lot to cut it. Youā€™d wonder if the Greens are against it.

I had a Spaniard over a few weeks ago. He was shocked at the 2.20 a litre proces he was seeing. It was ā‚¬1.75 at most in spain. 2 weeks ago

It was ā‚¬2.15 in Mallorca two weeks ago.

Eamon Ryan says that Irish agriculture needs to cut emissions by 30%. If not it will create an unfair burden on Irish households who will have to carry the can and make up for any shortfall in reduction of emissions. Thinking aloudā€¦ What does this plan entail exactly? Is it all about herd sizes or does it extend to things like fertilisers, fuel consumption etc? Given that we are quite good at producing food in a time where there might be scarcity it does seem a bit ill conceived. Afterall the demand for food is not going anywhere and will only increase. While Ireland may reduce emissions surely removing local supply chains would mean that on an aggregate basis for the world carbon other emissions would increase. But maybe Iā€™m missing something obvious. Instead of maybe putting burden on Irish households perhaps we could close the meta data centre. Afterall that consumes as much energy as 150,000 Irish households or nearly half a million people.

Totally agree on the data centre but presume they have contracts. I donā€™t follow the carbon stuff closely, but I think itā€™s about 30% or more of a cut needed across the board. Agriculture are kicking and screaming but if they want to cut less than that it means some other sector has to pick up the slack. On the details of the plan, itā€™s for the agriculture sector (the department) to decide how they make up that 30%.

I donā€™t know or understand whether the carbon footprint of food travelling across the world is counted towards the carbon cost of the exporting country or the importing country, or if itā€™s counted at all. But we just have to go ahead and operate according to the targets agreed anyway really.

European Fuel Prices (cargopedia.net)

Thatā€™s all grand in theory but if the last couple of years have thought us anything it is that we should become self sufficient in food. Yes we should produce less red meat but we shouldnā€™t need to import any grain or fruit or vegetables. Thereā€™s a big national dialogue to be had on this topic. We have one of the most benign climates in the world and we are importing beans from Kenya.

Its a bold statement to get support in the leafy south dublin suburbs with no thought or ideas on how to do it or any consequences. Whats worse than a moron? One with power

Well, maybe say the EU should become self sufficient in food. Iā€™m sure if Irish farmers could make a living out of growing beans they would. Also, ā€œtaughtā€, the covid clearly affecting you.
