Good half from Ireland.
They’ve had spells where they’ve been on top but they’re world champions and since the equaliser I think we’ve come back into it and look controlled.
The tactics have worked quite well, we’re pressing them a fair bit in possession, just need to be careful of the gap in front of the back 4. The idea of isolating the two centre halves (particularly Legrotagglie) in the wide areas against Keane and Doyle has paid off very well. Wingers dropping deep and only getting involved off the strikers.
Beglin making the point that McGeady should be used more but if we do that we’re giving him the ball in cramped areas and not utilising the big space in behind. As long as we’re playing decent passes to the corners we can keep dragging their centre halves out. Difficult to get numbers in the box from those scenarios so it’s about playing for free kicks and corners or laying it back to midfielders but it’s been a good equaliser for us because they’d pass us off the park if we just played like they do.
Unbelievable: we’re drawing 1-1 at half time against the world champions in a game where a point gets us a playoff spot for the world cup finals and Dunphy is waffling on about the problem is that Andy Reid isn’t playing.
Has that eejit no concept of how they’d walk it around Reid if he was in the middle of the park and how Zambrotta or Grosso would tear past him all game if he was on the wing? Clown.
