Of the 80 odd teams that have competed in the World Cup since its inception in 1930, I believe Eire are the only one that have not had even one single representative in their squad (and that’s over three World Cup’s) from their domestic league. Eire soccer development plan for decades has been to pay exorbitant salaries to management and administrators and hope for a steady stream of English players who’ll throw their lot in with Eire, however tenuous the connection. When the likes of Declan Rice and Jack Grealish, English born and bred don’t jump on the Eire bandwagon, screeching and wailing and toys thrown out of the pram.
I’d largely agree with that.
What part would you disagree with?
The first part is a fair point but also a bit misleading - in our squad over the last 10 years we’ve had plenty of lads that started at LOI and have played at the Euros - McClean, Coleman, Duffy, Wes etc. etc — we just havent been able to qualify for the WC
That is also a fair point.
It didn’t stop Sean Kelly and Stephen Roche
No it come unconsciously I think . Like a Connemara man talking Irish .

Boycott making up lies
Are you sating that Boycott has been telling lies on the internet???
Cameroon had players from their domestic league at the 1982 & 90 World Cups. Eire competed in 1990,1994 & 2002 World Cups and out of close to 70 players from these theee World Cups, not one from League of Ireland.
You have no credibility now Jeff

I’m not referring to individual World Cups. Of the 80 or so who’ve competed at the World Cup, I don’t believe there’s any other than Eire who have failed to have a representative from their domestic league at a World Cup.
Hold up boss, Roy Keane played in the 94 World Cup, a proud product of Rockmount FC and Cobh Ramblers, for example.
Surely your argument isn’t based on players still playing in an amateur league representing Ireland during a World Cup, with 5 or 6 professional leagues next door ready to snap up every decent Irish prospect? A watery argument if so…
