Shane Long has nearly 17 international goals in 83 appearances. A fair few of which have been off the bench. Some of them very important. Winner against Germany, equaliser against Poland both in qualifying. McGoldrick has 1 in 14 appearances. Idah and Connolly are young and raw but maybe should be used more sparingly and brought on for 20 minutes at the end of games rather that starting 2 nation league games and showing absolutely nothing. Playing well at underage does not mean you should be catapulted straight into the senior team. It seems the Kenny is paying too much heed to what is being said in the media and feels obliged to deliver this new era.

I’d say a lot of them are off the bench because he’s much better coming off the bench. I’d say his record in the 50 or 60 odd games he’s started isn’t pretty. His touch isn’t good enough to play up front alone in international football.

I looked it up and 12 of those 17 goals came in friendlies. Of the competitive ones, 1 in Russia in 2010, he didn’t start, 1 in Poland, he didn’t start, 1 against Gibraltar, he didn’t start, 1 against Germany, he didn’t start, 1 against Moldova which he started.

That’s 1 competitive goal for Shane Long in a game he started in what must be 40 odd starts in competitive fixtures. Let that be the end of trying to make him out to be more than he is

All those banging on about Coleman obviously forget he’s perfurmance v Switzerland last year where he was terrible and sent off. Coleman was a great player but that terrible injury ruined hes career.
