Is shiny happy people better than how soon is now? The REM thread

I can’t say that I love Jesus
That would be a hollow claim
He did make some observations
And I’m quoting them today

“Judge not lest ye be judged”
What a beautiful refrain
The studio audience disagrees
Have His lambs all gone astray?

Call me a leper
Call me a leper
Call me a leper

Asked by CBS correspondent Anthony Mason why the band was so against a comeback, Buck responded, “It would never be as good.”

Bill gets it

Wow, all four of them too!

Probably number one on my list of bands I haven’t seen that there may yet be a possibility of getting to see.

Mikey Mills keeping the rock star look going there. The others couldnt give a continental fuck which is admirable.

No - Peter.

Saw them twice in 10 days before as a 17 year old. Only went to see them once more when I was 21.

When I was in my mid 20s, I stopped listening to them for a while. Regret not going to see them again. Imagine seeing them play in the Olympia as they did on one of their later tours?

Not a hope that they’ll reunite.

Saw them in Croke Park in 1985 and the Simmonscourt Pavilion in 1989. I think they were at the peak of their powers at that 1989 gig. That was part of the Green tour.

Would have been amazing to be at one of those Olympia gigs. They’re still alive so there’s always hope!

Saw them in Lansdowne Road in 1999 and Ardgillan Castle in 2005.

Both were brilliant gigs,

Yeah, I was at that Landsdowne Road show. Saw them in Belgium in 99 too. Marlay Park in 2003 as well.

Bill’s answer to question on walking away is quite poignant. Makes me admire him and them even more.

The fact that all members of R.E.M. who played instruments contributed so differently and well to songwriting makes them so fascinating. All of them wrote brilliant songs for Stipe to put melody, lyrics and beautiful imagery over. Whether it was Buck with E-Bow, Berry with Perfect Circle or Mills with Nightswimming. Not many bands who were as collective as R.E.M. The synergy they had was and is special.

Great thread, kickstarting me to the “Albums you’ve rediscovered” thread, as I tend to get lazy and just don’t listen to enough of the stuff I grew up with. Saw them in SFX '84, RDS '89 and Marlay Park early 2000s I think. What a band, one of the great front men too, melodies to die for. Sitting here watching 50 years of Glastonbury, great stuff, memories flooding back, live music, eh? Johnny Marr and Undertones next week in Limerick, fuck it, rock on lads…

Brilliant.

The name SFX always amuses me. It sounds like a really cool, happening place but it actually stands for St Francis Xavier.

Correct. Was a great venue, pints in the Big Tree pre gig. Saw New Order, Smiths, U2, The Clash, Pogues there too, among other. Brought my teenage sister there to see The Thompson Twins, she was under very strict instructions not to tell anyone, my street cred was at stake

Morrissey asked at his gig in Vicar Street last July who had been in the SFX back in the day?

A few cheered.

‘LIARS’ said Morrissey.
