Saw them twice in 10 days before as a 17 year old. Only went to see them once more when I was 21.
When I was in my mid 20s, I stopped listening to them for a while. Regret not going to see them again. Imagine seeing them play in the Olympia as they did on one of their later tours?
Saw them in Croke Park in 1985 and the Simmonscourt Pavilion in 1989. I think they were at the peak of their powers at that 1989 gig. That was part of the Green tour.
Billâs answer to question on walking away is quite poignant. Makes me admire him and them even more.
The fact that all members of R.E.M. who played instruments contributed so differently and well to songwriting makes them so fascinating. All of them wrote brilliant songs for Stipe to put melody, lyrics and beautiful imagery over. Whether it was Buck with E-Bow, Berry with Perfect Circle or Mills with Nightswimming. Not many bands who were as collective as R.E.M. The synergy they had was and is special.
Great thread, kickstarting me to the âAlbums youâve rediscoveredâ thread, as I tend to get lazy and just donât listen to enough of the stuff I grew up with. Saw them in SFX '84, RDS '89 and Marlay Park early 2000s I think. What a band, one of the great front men too, melodies to die for. Sitting here watching 50 years of Glastonbury, great stuff, memories flooding back, live music, eh? Johnny Marr and Undertones next week in Limerick, fuck it, rock on ladsâŚ
Correct. Was a great venue, pints in the Big Tree pre gig. Saw New Order, Smiths, U2, The Clash, Pogues there too, among other. Brought my teenage sister there to see The Thompson Twins, she was under very strict instructions not to tell anyone, my street cred was at stake
