I know cases where this has happened and the small business has really struggled to survive. It would break my own company if we had to pay a wage to a person who wasn’t working for whatever reason. I’m not saying it’s right but there should be some level of cop on involved here or more detailed legislation with regard to how much a company should pay if someone is on maternity leave.

And there you have the reason why the ‘Labour’ party are wavering around 3% and looking likely to be wiped out at the next election!!!

You have to pay her 90% for six weeks and I think 50% for another while on the mainland. You also have to pay her pension. You can try and claim some back, but not all, and you have to pay the grossly inflated wages of an agency.
You also have to pay for any pregnancy related sick pay and any hospital or doctor appointment time. It adds up.
You have to pay all accrued annual leave also.
None of this is reclaimable.

I am commenting on this case alone. I don’t know what business @flattythehurdler is in but if the role requires a certain level of trust then my immediate opinion of her would change. She didn’t trust them enough to tell them she was pregnant.
