Nauseating drivel by Kevin Myers. While I understand that KM is a talisman for people who get terribly offended by other people’s penchant for taking offense, there should be a sense of measure in whom you adopt as such a talisman. PJ O’Rourke, perhaps. But KM, a wheedling vain buffoon…? As for George Hook… There is grasping at straws and there is grasping at daws.

KM, on foot of being a Zionist, might plausibly be described as not being an anti Semite. But there is no doubt the column in question had truck with anti-Semitic stereotypes. Else, why did KM unreservedly apologize to the two female journalists in question?

KM needs to realize, however belatedly, ‘freedom of speech’ and ‘freedom to offend’ are not interchangeable terms. KM has always been emphatic about ‘social welfare culture’ and people needing to take personal responsibility for their situation. Remember the acronym MOBs, mother of bastards, for single parents? Well, KM needs to take responsibility for writing a column that was far worse than “poor” in its implications.

My own view is that said column was no worse than many of his other efforts. But if you live by the sword of manufactured outrage… I have never been able to see any merit, any originality or excellence of writing style, in KM’s work. He is a childish, vain, predictable buffoon, the sort of clown who complained to The Irish Times about being referred to as “Myers” rather than as “Mr Myers”. But hey, there is clearly an audience for this drivel, until you insult Jewish women.

I have to laugh when I read KM bemoaning his fellow journalists calling him to account. All his writing career, KM had traded on atttacking people. Into the bargain, KM emerges as an out and out hypocrite. Yes, Fintan O’Toole can be painfully self righteous. But what item more snugly fits the description “vicious attack”, FO’T’s piece on KM or KM’s column on MOBs? The answer is as obvious as KM’s facelift.

KM basically thinks he can say whatever he wants about anyone. But if KM is on the receiving end of even a much diluted version of the invective that was his stock in trade…? Hauteur soon avalanches into flailing self pity and hypocrisy.

As it happens, the AP story is no surprise to me. Around 12 months ago, friend of mine told me about an incident similar to the ones now coming to light. Friend of his was taking a leak in a pub jacks during the Cat Laughs festival. AP comes in and reaches over and grabs his genitals. Then AP furucked off, piss less, when told to furuck off in no uncertain terms. Neither my friend nor his one, from what I have heard, is in any way homophobic. But assault is assault, whoever does it.
