Kevin myers- an alright sort

:musical_note: Hello darkness my old friend
 :musical_note:

Mind-boggling stuff
Anecdotalism run to seed. You effectively have a lad saying: ‘I have really strong opinions about Jane Austen.’ Then the punchline: ‘I’ve never read any of her novels.’

Mad.

A lad could form a very strong and reasonable opinion about jane austen novels after a chapter or two. Ie that they are turgid and slow, and not for him, but each to their own.
One wouldn’t have to read the entirety of the Bible for example, to form an opinion on it.
Sure a lad could form an opinion about who you may be, and how genuinely odd you are from reading a few posts. And it might be entirely correct.

Good article - this country is built on immigration.

The author is correct that the culture of this country is a much more English than Irish one.

Myers lowers the blade on Rowling

I had forgotten that she was one of the twitter mob head honchos with the knives out for Myers. It’s a long road that has no turn

It’s a good article that.
I think jkr is an alright sort, but was never aware she had lowered the blade on Myers, who was more sinned against than sinning.

Myers is and was a cunt and what he wrote was pretty disgraceful

It could be interpreted that way. I didn’t think that was his point. I don’t know what he’s like in person or by reputation though.
I do bizarrely value your opinion despite having no idea who you are outside fagan o dowd

What’s your take on what J.K Rowling wrote?

Harry Potter?

Very clever. No, her tweet.

He fairly stitched it in here:

This was in 2017, and the personal lunacies foreshadowed the solar storms of 2020, as the Black Lives Matter and associated mobs revealed their enormous power in riots, sackings, cancellations and boycotts across the Anglophone world. In response to this madness, some 150 literary luminaries (including Rowling) last week signed a letter to Harper’s Magazine defending free speech, stating: ‘As writers we need a culture that leaves us room for experimentation, risk taking, and even mistakes.’

Mistakes, J.K.? As in forgiving yours , but never mine? But the courage of the signatories then left them — for the letter did not mention BLM, ‘left’ nor ‘liberal’, but managed to denounce President Trump, ‘the radical right’ and ‘right-wing demagogues’. Perish the thought that anyone on their side of the debate would be engaging in smears and character assassination.

Personally I didn’t like it.

That seems like a very mild reaction compared to the reaction of the twitter mob. She was called “witch”, “bitch”, “anti-trans”, “transphobic”, “trans-exclusionary radical feminist”, and “feminazi”.

I’m not one of the twitter mob so that might explain it.

Myers is an awful loss to discourse in modern Ireland.

Nobody writes with such sneer. I suspect he’s a bit of a narcissist at the back of it all but he’s often correct on many topics.
