Kilkenny GAA thread

Maybe a bit off tactically indeed, but I’d have been of the opinion they had no right to bait Galway so I’d be firmly in the Cody camp. Cork were 1/3 against them in 08’. Unless there’s serious lads left off the panel I think he is performing miracles tbh!

In 19 rather and I think Limerick were 2/5

All @Malarkey is doing is asking a few questions is all? Shur anyone is entitled to do that. Shur theres even people in Tipp saying Sheedy is too slow in bringing in new lads.

The players will always point to the management when things are going wrong or stale. I don’t think the author made any personal critiques of the team or tactics, merely reported on a general feeling creeping in in Kilkenny circles.

Maybe it is gone stale.

Cody is capable of making Kilkenny greater than the sum of their parts on a given day, still.

Maybe the feeling within is Kilkenny’s base gameplan is gone a bit old fashioned.

Cody is still able to read a game and an opposition, in my opinion.

Maybe there is a want of modernisation.

KK v Waterford on TG4 at 8, I’ve a few bob on Celtic who are presently stinking out the joint.

I agree with most of that, especially that he’s over performing but they do look clueless at times when a game is going away from them

Are they emptying the tank early to stay in games? I suspect they are.

Sure what has he to bring on? He left Fennelly off the last day to try give the bench a bit of oomph. His best lads are coming to the end of a long hard road. Richie Hogan has about 25 good minutes in him. Cody has to decide whether that’s at the start or the end.

Things will get worse before they get better in Kilkenny

I think a lot of it has been the lack of consistency over the last two years in particular that has them frustrated more than anything. Couldn’t bate Wexford in the Leinster final last year and went for goals way too early when they had enough point scoring chances and enough time to save it. Then turned around and gave Kiely a lesson in tactics in the semi. Complete collapse against Tipp in the final (Tipp would have won with or without Hogan) What was worse was they kept firing ball in on top of Fennely and it came straight back out. Fast forward to this year and it’s more or less the same. Collapsed but got out of jail against Dublin. An unbelievable match v Galway and then fell on their holes again against Waterford
So theres flashes of potential there but they cant seem to put it together on a consistent basis. They are by no means the team they were but they still have enough hurling in them to be in among the mix.
The question is is Cody still the right man to get the most out of them. That question is entitled to be asked.
Even if hes not the man going forward, I’m not sure the likes of Sheflin wouldn’t touch it yet. Sheflin is cute enough. He wont make a move for that job until the green shoots are about a foot off the ground.

I don’t get the consistency thing either Mike. They lost in a final last year and a semi this year. They won a decent Leinster this year.

There wasn’t too many lads worried about them being stale or their tactics when they were thumping Waterford in the semi.

I’d imagine the nature of the capitulation in that game didn’t go down well at all, within the setup and outside it. That shouldn’t happen to Kilkenny, that’s a standard and expectation set by Cody’s teams in my lifetime anyway.

I wouldn’t want to be the man in after him. 20 odd years of doing it one way is hard to unravel.

Anyway, it’s kind of self defeating what Cody has created. Their year would have been considered successful in most of the hurling set ups in the country but a lost semi and a provincial is a possible crisis in Kilkenny.

You’ve kind of answered you’re own question in that post. Look at Limerick in 2013 and 14 and you’re looking at Kilkenny today. The fundamental thing is that winning a leinster championship and reaching an all Ireland semi or final doesn’t cut the mustard to your average Kilkenny fan anymore. Back in 2013 and 14 we kind of saw it as progress. Cody has set such a standard in Kilkenny that its seen as a regression.

I didnt ask a question but I think we’ve as much agreement as you’re likely to get on tfk here. :grinning:

Ah you know what I mean

Cody did remarkably well to get Kilkenny to the all ireland final in 2019 and a leinster title in 2020.

Having said that, time for a change all the same, there will never be an ideal time for him to move along , he may go out as manager of the leinster champions

It will be interesting to see the player reaction to this in the coming weeks.

This is just comedy gold

Cant see any change this year. Off season is too short.

Time for change, Cody out.

Do any of the KK heads here know is DJ being replaced on the mgmt ticket? Or who would he their preference of those left.

I was talking to a shrewdie over the weekend who reckoned the primary reason Henry took over Thomastown was to have a scout for players in the intermediate championship. He knows all about the 12 senior teams and this is his chance to run an eye over players in intermediate. My man reckons Henry will be in charge of the seniors this time next year.

I enjoyed the article @Malarkey, I’d imagine it’s what a lot of Kilkenny folk have been saying behind closed doors. There is too much respect for Cody for anyone to knife him or even discuss out loud him moving on but I’d say there is a decent appetite for transition within the county.
