Would not be quite true, though, about other sports being invisible, although this point became more true in 21st century. Soccer was strong to very strong from early 1970s to late 1990s. A lot of soccer heads then started getting back involved in hurling in one of the city clubs, via sons and so forth. I know of an instance where one such individual, acutely hostile to juvenile hurling in 1980s and 1990s, forever putting hassle on young lads who wanted to hurl as well kick soccer, when a close friend of mine was coaching a lot in one of the city clubs, ended up a Senior selector with that city club in the mid 2010s.
So much has to do with national school numbers. I know that in recent years Galmoy NS had only 24 boys in the whole eight classes. This scenario is going to be a huge difficulty for the parish and the club.
You can just be lucky. There were 31 children born in Ballyhale in 2019. There are rakes of boys between 4 and 12. Some of them already look exceptional.
Graiguenamanagh have contributed very little to the Kilkenny county cause owe the years. The best hurler they ever produced ended up captaining Wexford to win two All Ireland’s. Arguable that after that most of the best hurlers from the town were on the Carlow side of the river in Tinnehinch.
Trying to think of who the Ballyhale parish man was on the 1993 All Ireland winning team? Liam Fennelly retired after captaining the 1992 winning team.
This is without googling but it was pretty much the same team as ‘92 apart from Jamsie Brennan from ‘Comer on the full forward line instead of Fennelly. Can’t think of any Shamrocks man in ‘93. But they were on the way down at that stage.
