No that saying is attributed to Cromwell who said he would take Waterford by Hook or by Crooke.
Crooke is situated between Passage and Woodstown on the Suir Estuary and houses the Geneva Barracks which became a notorious prison during the 98 rebellion and many rebels were executed here.
Crooke also contains the parish church for the Passage and Woodstown area and the Passage GAA grounds.

There is also a grave for an unknown Croppy soldier there. My father was a mine of this sort of information driving around the country as a youngster

Gents and ladies, I have a great pal who is battling a severe illness. I’m home on August 24 for a week, and I’d really like to go to a game somewhere with him, hurling preferably or football. A decent club game. Galway, mayo or limerick, somewhere within an hour of galway. Any suggestions?
