Canty was little more than a big athletic donkey with not much else to him whereas Gormley was Mickey Harteâs go to man for negating the oppositions biggest threat which he effectively carried out again and again and again right up until his last season.
Conor Gormley is the best defender of the past 20 years. Canty wouldnât even feature in the top 50 of that time.
Mattie would have given as good as he got, often got involved in needless shite.
Incidentally, the Offaly lad who put his neck under his boot in 2006 was given a 3 year driving ban recently for lying to Gardai about who was driving his car for a penalty points notice. He should go in the persons of questionable character thread.
The likes of @Chucks_Nwoko and his crew never forgave him for playing before his suspension was handed down. One of the worst handlings of a case I can ever remember.
As good as Mattie was he was at fault for us not beating Dublin in 2010. That was the defeat that hurt most of us bandwagon football supporters the most.
So you think a player who retired at 29 had kept going after his legs were gone is a better mark than a player who retired at 31 after numerous back surgeries? I donât follow that logic.
Ulster forwards have to swim across the lake to the All Ireland finals series, Cork and Kerry get a nice boat ride across to that stage.
The thing that made Canavan, Linden, McCartan, McDonnell, Bradley, Murphy McManus, McConville, OâNeill et al special was their ability to produce the goods in the melting pot of the game.
The game is rigged, son. We know it but we just have to get on with it.
but I am right in saying that it drives you mad that during Tyrones glory years 03-08 kerry won 3 all irelands as did Tyrone. While in five years after this Kerry won 2 more and in preceding 5 years to Tyrones glory periods Kerry won 2. Tyrone have done little before and little after their glory years.
With the exception of Donegal in 2012, Kerry have bottled every final where it has been put up to them. You can put an asterisk beside all the ones they won against Cork and Mayo.
but teams struggle to put it up to them because they are so good no? None of the kerry teams that won all irelands in the last 15 years were that good but still managed to win it.
Having to go from May to September every year, playing must win games after each other and needing to be at the top of your game for that period is exhausting and takes a lot out of you - that was the reality for Ulster teams. It was hard to put it back to back given what they had to put into it. Guys are going full tilt from May, there is no time to rest players who are carrying knocks you had to get them wrapped up and on the pitch because they were must win games and this takes its toll. Canavan played pretty much his last three years injured for Tyrone, he never got time to rest his injuries as it was big game after big game.
Kerry and Cork on the other hand could saunter into the last 12 without lifting a finger because the Munster Championship was so shit, all rested up and fresh and having being able to plan and prepare for this months ahead.
Every year Ulster teams would have to run a full marathon where the Munster teams would join in half the way along, fresh and prepared.
but Kerry only saunter through because theyâve mastered beating the cannon fodder at there ease. The brand of football they play makes it easy for them to hammer inferior teams. Tyrone have shown in qualifiers and in the Ulster championship that they struggle massively against teams vastly inferior to them. They are too focused on how to stop teams like Kerry but never developed a plan to beat the crap teams easily in the first ten minutes like Kerry did and Mayo and the Dubs are doing now. It is the biggest failing of Mickey Harte.
