Lawnmowers

What’s your issue with the ride on? Maintenance? Have that decision to make. One big wrap around lawn to back and side and smaller one to front. 6k is a sizeable outlay. The ride on would get me out of the mad house and young lad will do it in a few years.

  • It’s fairly old as I bought it second hand and not in tip top running order any more
  • It’s too big to get to every piece of grass so I’ve to go round with a push lawnmower or strimmers every few weeks to cut down the bits it has missed
  • Leaves heavy compact marks in places if the grass is any way damp or wet, as I drive away to dispose of the grass
  • Grass disposal a bit of an issue too as there’s so much of it when you’re cutting it weekly or every ten days
  • Time consideration. It’s probably 90mins a week for six months of the year and when you’ve a toddler and two of ye working full time it can be tricky each week to get time that coincides with fine weather

Now in saying all that on the occasions when time isn’t an issue and the sun is on my back it’s a lovely 90mins. But those 90mins a week are precious enough at the stage of life I’m at and maybe could be better served doing exercise than sitting on a mower. I think I’ll definitely get them in but the question is 1. Will I wait another season or not and 2. Will I go with cheaper machines than the Husqvarna at the guts of €6,000 for a complete system. I’d be in dread of someone robbing them too (even though I know they would be worthless to them but if you got an opportunistic 17yr old thief he may not know that at the time).

There’s a lovely bit of peace to going out on the ride on lawnmower to cut the acre as the missus looks out at you from the island. I wouldnt give it up for anything.

And lads want a change of Government.

There’d be nights there you’d get the strimmers out first and then the blowers… up onto the ride on then and a can in one hand with another in the pocket.

You wouldn’t even need a podcast.

Sounds like.your man is on the make trying to sell.you multiple robots. Can it not be lifted from one lawn and on to the next?

I know him a while I think he’s genuine (I could be wrong). I think the problem is I’ve a 3/4 acre site with a good gap between front lawns and back lawn. I’m not sure there is one machine that would satisfactorily cut three unconnected lawns, one of which is big back lawn, and going through various tarmac channels? I suppose if I got the one with the biggest range it might be possible but those ones are in the region of €5k before you add labour and cabling.

@Smark can you reduce the amount of area you need to cut ? Spending €500 on a digger could save you 2.5k on the price of a robot if you could reduce it down. Get onto Google Earth and measure the area in sq mtrs that you need to cut. You are then armed with the information that you need to select the correct size/make robot to do the job. There are no disadvantages to getting a robot, in fact you just reminded me that I even have one, I’m so used to looking out over my perfectly manicured estate 365 days a year with zero effort or time spent on my behalf.

Are you thinking to take out some of my lawn and plant trees or flowers instead to reduce the size? Yerrah no I’m happy with how it looks without taking some out to reduce the cost of the robot needed. Have you one or two robots where you are?

You’ll be parking up the walk behind mower with one of these. They will go into every nook & corner easily.

Service once a year, edge blades etc. Only drawback is mulching without collector option but works fine for me bar the moss it attracts.

Just the one that cuts approx 3200 sq mtrs. I didn’t cost anything like you’ve been quoted and doesn’t appear to be under any pressure. Having 3 seperate areas to cut might be a challenge but not impossible either as long as you don’t have kerbs or steps to overcome. I’m thinking now 3/4 acre wouldn’t be far off 3200 sq mtrs ?

There’s always something, I know. But take everything into account when buying.
It also says to avoid cutting at night. This is about hedgehogs and robotic lawnmowers.

I took your suggestion and measured out my lawns using Google earth. It’s actually come out at just over 2000m2 all in, if i’ve done it fairly accurately. I have more tarmac and less grass than you’d think for the size of the plot. This definitely opens up possibility of using just one robot that has the range above 2000m2 and not exceeding 3000m2. Just means more channels connecting the lawns but this is a game changer if I can get away with one instead of two.

@Smark is there not a Husqvarna model that is about 4000 euro that would cover the whole site rather than having to buy two. Is there any way you can join the front to the back to facilitate this?

He could level the house.

I’m hoping so, he’s calling in later in the week to have a quick look at the gardens so I’ll pick his brain then.

My brother in law has a bigger site and his machine does it all and crosses a driveway as well… Maybe your site is v hillly but don’t know did you need a 2nd machine

You could download a few Joe Rogan podders to enlighten the 90 minutes.
