Here - seeing as you want to get involved in the discussion would you make yourself useful. Would you post up a link to the Sinn Fein suggested rate of Corporation Tax - I’m sure they’ve a different view to the “FFG militia”. Good man.

You’ve triggered them now.

The klaxon sounded.

They will be all on soon like an angry locust.

@mikehunt is correct, MNCs do not pay their fair share of tax. He has the location wrong though, they don’t pay their fair share in the US, where the majority of their taxes should be paid. In fact most of them pay nothing in the US. The primary reason MNCs are in Ireland is it’s a component of their perfectly legal tax avoidance strategy, along with prior years operating losses, accelerated depreciation, expensing stock options, tax credits, etc. etc. Based on tax law they helped write.

The 60 largest companies in the US pay no corporate tax in the US, in fact they get a rebate. Think about that, that’s how much the US government supports US corporations. Amazon for example had profits of $11 billion in 2018 and got a tax rebate of $120 million. That’s how much influence they have over tax policy, in the largest economy in the world. At least Ireland are collecting some corporate tax, billions more than the US does in fact.

A serious overhaul of US corporate tax law is long overdue, to close loopholes and ensure the large corporations pay their fair share of corporate tax. When this happens, it will likely be bad for Ireland. If the local hairdresser or gardening business have to pay 21% or soon 28% tax, the largest corporations shouldn’t be allowed avoid paying any tax.

The same lads who have spent the best part of a year pissing and moaning about the government handling of the pandemic on the Coronavirus thread come rushing to the defence of FFG on this thread. Fascinating to watch so it is.

The economically literate libertarians are the heart beat of the board.

Imagine being in favour of certain things the establishment do but being against other things instead of being 100% partisan. Lads on here can’t grasp the concept.

The reality is -

The “left” were shit scared of government after last GE . That said FF and FG gave them a pass of sorts

If we have a government sans FF or FG the whole corporation tax policy won’t change . Any one thinking otherwise is most naive

A govt without FF or FG is not going to happen anytime in the short term due to the numbers.

It was possible after last election and will be more so after next .

That’s not true.

FFG had 72 seats. Labour had 6 and did not want to go into govt. And you had 20 independents…

The numbers don’t add up for a left leaning government and to say otherwise is spinning a yarn.

Follow up on corporate tax of MNCs. The Biden proposal on corporate tax if enacted will change the landscape quite significantly, especially in the area of taxation of foreign profits of US multinationals. It will change the minimum tax rate on foreign profits to 21%, and change the country by country rules to prevent corporations avoiding tax. If this happens it will end the days of tech companies paying no tax in the US, but it will be at the expense of countries like Ireland where they currently pay tax.

Will he stay awake long enough?
