Mike Casey done the hard bit really well but his use of the ball isnāt good. He took an age to clear a ball and ended hitting it over the sideline. He also nearly let McGrath in for a goal from a sloppy clearance. He needs to work on that but it will come I feel. David Dempsey didnāt really have a chance to make an impression. Pat Simon showed for the ball great, won some great ball and carried it well but he hit three wides id say in ten minutes which again needs to be worked on. Paul Browne done ok and well barry Murphy took the goal brilliantly.
Paul Browne was horrendous in his two cameos.
Iāll need to rewatch that but I didnāt notice anything too bad. So many of our players are doing the hard bits but itās the basic stuff that lets them down. Hayes and morrissey seem to always hit it wide when theyāve loads of time.
He was way off when he came on.
Hands up. And bow down. We won. But by fuck we made it hard. Slippy had 5 points given away at half time.
Just back. Sitting down to a bottle of beer. Donāt know what the fuck to make of that. Very content and with the overall performance 10-15 points wouldnāt have flattered us. Our biggest win over them in championship since the 81 replay.
Found myself tearing whatever bit of hair Iāve left in frustration particularly during the first half.
Thought the whole game was played in second gear and wondered what would happen if Tippett lifted it a notch. Theye couldnāt though and if anything Limerick had the extra gear when needed. Thought the half back line was very good and Diarmuid Byrnes used the ball well.
We were very hesitant to go for goals though with Gillane and Mulcahy presented with good chances in the first half but opted for points instead.
Will take a closer look on the Sunday game but things aināt so bad.
Youāll see nothing on the Sunday Game bud.
Ah I know. Iāll just enjoy it though. I have the game recorded but will wait until tomorrow before watching it back. It was a cunt of a drive home and Iām knackered after it.
Outstanding . Really good technically .
Kudos to o Connor and kinnerk. I doubted them massively. Limerick primed and ready for the big day.
Three things today that show Lk are going in the right direction .
A half forward line that can win puck outs.
The days of defenders working the ball out easy against Lk are gone .
Two quick sticky corner backs .
Gillane is phenomenal at catching the ball and turning before he lands. Defenders almost have to foul him.
Just back from the Gaelic Grounds after seeing us walk all over Tipperary.
Done a job on them in the minor too. A dayyyy-cent day.
That was by no means a great performance from Limerick, there is a lot of improving to do. But it was clear at half-time that we were the better team, and just needed the composure to see it off. We made it difficult for ourselves: hitting some bad wides, giving away very soft frees, and the two goals were poor to concede. But we kicked on in the second half, and I felt as if we always had another gear and the last 10 minutes was impressive. Iām encouraged but we definitely played within ourselves; match was dead for long periods, and we can definitely raise the intensity another couple of notches.
Quaid- Could have come out and dealt with the ball before the first goal. Puck-outs in the second half were really really good, I thought.
Finn- Nice & sticky, did a good job.
Hickey- Gave away too many frees. Was surprised he made it out for the second half tbh; might be harsh but need to be ruthless at this level, and I think Casey needs to come in.
English- Absolutely superb. Flaked Bubbles out of it early on, and Bubbles wilted. Battled away excellently all afternoon; striking off one side still a tiny bit suspect.
Byrnes- A colossus. Finally heeded the advice that he must have been getting in terms of langering the ball wide. Delivered some great ball into Gillane, and just played really well.
Hannon- Another towering performance. McGrath might have got two scored but Hannon did well sitting deep and cutting off a lot of the supply going in which forced Tipp to go higher. Caught some great ball and read things well.
Morrissey- One bad moment when he gave away possession and Tipp scored in the second half but in general was very solid, and again, his use of the ball is superb.
OāDonovan- Was busy, picked up a good point; can fair cut a sideline.
Lynch- Didnāt totally dominate, but was still good. A point in either half, and does get on the ball. Midfield was bypassed for large periods, has more to offer.
Hegarty- Overran the ball a few times, but hit two lovely scores; the one in the second half was class. He works and he works.
Hayes- Didnāt get on a huge pile of ball but what did the Mahers do? Fuck all. Was a big puckout option throughout too.
Morrissey- Hit a couple of bad wides early doors, but recovered well; hit 2 and won a good free. Works so hard; Iād keep him in there.
Gillane- I thought he was really good; tortured his man. 2 points from play and won a few frees; caught some great ball over his man. Did miss a few frees which is unlike him, but still excellent.
Flanagan- Touch slightly off once or twice; did well to get the score he did. Again, one of the most effective tacklers in the team.
Mulcahy- When heās in that kinda form, heās unmarkable. Such a low centre of gravity, so accurate; if you get him the right type of ball, he will score. Slightly surprised he was first off, thought he could have got a couple more.
Murphy- Some finish for the goal.
Dempsey- Made a positive impact, good player to have on the bench.
Casey- Solid when he came on; think he should come in for the next game, shored things up.
Pat Ryan- So much energy, made a real impact. Did miss a few chances, but still a positive contribution.
Browne- Gave away one ball sloppily when on as a blood sub, did hit a bad wide too. But got on a lot of ball.
I canāt ever recall Limerick beating one of the top three with such ease in my life time. In 2013 lads were playing far above the sum of their parts likewise in 2014. This year is very different. Weāre like a young horse winning its races but still really green around the ears. Thatās the fourth very composed performance against a good team this year alone. Our consistency is so unlimerick like and yet thereās so much to improve on.
Our first championship win of note since the quarter final in 2014.
EDIT - Iām ignoring the shit fest victory against Clare in 2015 considering what followed.
The work rate of the forwards is on a different plane to the last few years, constant pressure on defenders and this helps our defenders no end. Our style of play creates loads of chances and lets hope it continues. My tuppence worth on the players today.
Quaid - couldnāt be faulted for either of the goals puck outs were excellent can only remember 1 where it skidded over the sideline in the second half.
Finn - a display weāve come to expect. In your face aggression and easily win the battle against McGrath. A gem.
Hickey - improved in the second half after a nightmarish opening period. Could be looking at Mike Casey here going forward.
English - got caught on the wrong side for the first goal and mis hit a hand pass that led to a score in the second half but overall was excellent. Highlight was putting Bubbles on his hole early doors.
Byrnes - outstanding use of the ball was spot on. One moment on the first half it looked like for a split second he was winding up for a shot but played a good ball into the inside line. Spot on with the frees also.
Hannon - best ever display at centre back. Swept very well in front of the full back line and distribution was excellent bar the poor pass which led to Fordes last free in the first half.
Morrissey - another assured display becoming a key man.
Oā Donovan - thought he started slowly but really grew into it as the game progressed. Has cemented his place in my opinion.
Lynch - 2 great scores and was always in the thick of the action. Again seems to be taking the right options this year.
Hegarty - a bit of a mixed bag went down a few blind alleys in the first half but never went missing and 2 key scores in the second half.
Hayes - worked his bollix off in a deeper role never let up sets the tone for me in terms of work rate for the forwards.
Morrissey - continued his league form work rate again v impressive missed a few handy ones but chipped in with a few vital scores.
Gillane - had his man beaten up a stick and will excuse his few missed frees. A great performance on his first championship start.
Flanagan - things didnāt really go his way but never shirked his responsibilities and harried the Tipp backs throughput his time on the pitch. Took his score well and will start again against Cork.
Mulcahy - brilliant first half just shows the difference when quality ball is put in front of him as opposed to skiers being rained down on him during the Teege era. Peter Casey will have to join the queue behind him. Was surprised he was subbed but may have been tiring.
Subs: Pat Ryan a great man to take on tiring defences a great impact sub but will be disappointed he didnāt convert his chances.
Murphy - took his goal brilliantly another great option off the bench.
Casey - solid when he came on bar one misguided run up the line. Could replace Hickey the next day.
Dempsey - didnāt make a huge impact when he came on
Still unbeaten in 70 minutes this yearš
I havenāt seen too many replays and maybe very harsh but should Quaid have cut out the ball for the first goal? Thought Dan m was caught out of position too for it.
Would need to study it again but I donāt think he would have made it
Agreed. Quaid was poor for the first goal.
