He was v good for the most part at 7 against Galway…lets see how he goes on Sunday.
Seámus Hickey is an outstanding defender. He was exceptional in 2014 for example. It’s mental how many Limerick posters have such little time for their genuinely top class players like Hickey and O’Mahony but have complete faith in completely unproven or lesser operators (e.g. @The_Burner lauding William O’Donoghue or @glasagusban saying Peter Casey will be one of the best forwards of all time).
You seem to see what’s happening during matches. Keep up the good work trying to educate the weaker minds
Harsh, but as @PhattPike pointed out a few hundred posts back, that did happen on one particular occasion against Galway on the open stand side.
I’d still have him starting at 7 on Sunday…he did more right then wrong in fairness.
Hickey was terrible in 2015 and fairly poor in 2016 but I wouldn’t be rewriting history and saying he wasn’t good in 2014. Just because we lost against Cork & Kilkenny doesn’t mean he was poor.
We’re comparing him to our other players and he was by far our best defender in 2014 and well-deserving of his All-Star. Now, he hasn’t matched that form since then but this season, he has generally looked decent.
And while he can be guilty of over-elaborating at times and leaving space, I would say that he has cut it down a lot this year, and the qualities he does bring in the half-back line are useful. He’s good in the air, very physical and athletic. With Hayes & Hegarty in the forwards, we don’t have another wing-back in that mould really. Gavin is a completely different type of player.
Hickey could have been a fine midfielder but I don’t see him as one of the two best midfielders in the current panel, and definitely not maximising current resources. It’s irrelevant really, there is not even the slightest indication that Kiely will consider him for anywhere except the half-back line.
He would be a far better option at MF than James Ryan IMO.
Hickey is prone to major mental lapses he’s grand out half back where he can get away with it but he’s a liability in the corner. I’d be happy enough with him at cb. He’s either been poorly coached or won’t listen to anyone, to see him take off on a solo run is terrifying he could literally do anything.
Hegarty for me is better facing the ball, look Kiely is trying to make Limerick at least competitive under puckouts…he’s trying to build a half back line…we’re in deep transition.
But I’m not too overly pessimistic given the results…think we’ll have a decent year still.
I never buy into All Stars Conor Forgarty no all star or even Dan McCormack both key to winning all Ireland medals. Eoin Larkin changed his style of hurling in 2011 to help the team won four all Ireland’s to 2015 got no all star so Hickey deserving of all star as noel Gallagher said when city won the league who’s got the medal
Far better?
Don’t really see what that’s based on. I’m a big fan of Hickey but Ryan has at least as good an engine, much better at winning rucks and loose ball in the middle third and a lot more composed. Hickey is better in the air, probably quicker and better at running with the ball, neither’s hurling is the sharpest.
Agree
When you’ve watched a Limerick game in 2017…your apprasials maybe worth reading.
Until then do us all a favour will you, and fuck off out of the thread.
I can never understand the LK faithful’s love for James Ryan.
Obviously All-Stars aren’t the be all and end all but I do think for the most part, they reflect the best players in a particular position. And I do think that Hickey was one of the two best-performing corner-backs in the country that season.
I’ll do just that.
Are you one of these guys that when Byrne’s came on the scene you were worried cause he might take one of your buddies place on the panel
No.
I was a fan of Byrnes from watching him with the intermediates the year before he came onto the senior panel.
Fair play to Byrnes. There’s a great bit of cut to him and he’d drive through a brick wall for Limerick.
Byrne’s is a tough man real leader
