Is he not also with the underage hurling academy in Limerick
If there is one criticism of Dempsey, itās that he drifts in and out of games a lot. At club level you get away with that, because when he lights up, he can be absolutely devastating and hit you for 3 or 4 points in a very short space of time.
At intercounty level, you need contributions to for the full 70 which is why Kiely likes players like Hegarty and Hayes. Dempsey is obviously a big favourite of his tooā¦ And he would be an absolute certain starter if he was delivering for the full 70.
Iād say if you looked at his possession count in 10-minute blocks, youād notice serious fluctuation.
The big problem for me is you canāt see our half forwards delivering 6-10 pts consistently a game.
Match fixed for 7 on Saturday. @dodgykeeper will be seething!!!
We have an awful problem of not composing ourselves and taking our score. Cian Lynch is a sublime hurler with top notch striking and if I had one fault it would be he should be a 3-4 point a game player and he is not. Paul Browne is done, he has been for three years and management need to make the call next day out, play Colin Ryan or OāDonovan. Whatās the story with Barry Nash??
Hayes and Hegarty with their ability to beat defenders and lay off ball create 3-4 goals chances a game. Thatās what I want from our half forwards. They are will able to win their own ball and work their socks of in defense. Iāve little worries about them scoring enough. Iād love if we played peter Casey at 11.
While Iād agree that is the case, is that the norm? Weāre clearly set up to get serious amounts of scores from play from our inside line.
The half-forwards should win an amount of frees which should be as good as a score.
I get both sides of the argument. We are not a prolific side anyway and work rate in the side is better than most which creates good goal scoring chances.
Thatās exactly it, if Heggo wins clean possession you have to foul him and itās a free from a very scorable area his striking has improved hugely this year too so the leaving him shoot rather than commit the foul option is nearly gone.
And our plan so far has also relied on getting scores from the bench, the likes of Reidy, Pat Ryan, Mulcahy and obviously Colin Ryan the last day have come on and picked off scores. Add the likes of Nash, Dowling, Dempsey to that and youād hope weāll get scores after other fellas have worked themselves to a standstill.
Limerick are never able to keep a scoreboard ticking over. Thatās a problem weāve had for as long as I can remember. Weāll have a surge then go 10-15-20 minutes without a score. Good teams, top teams will always hang in there. How many times over the years will you see Tipp or Cork or the Cats tacking on a couple of handy scores right after you score a goal for example?
You enjoy your day in Thomond on Saturday, pal.
Iāll keep a seat for you in the Kinnane Stand. Hope you donāt get caught in match traffic on the way to Thurlesā¦
Itās true, and itās something that will have to change. Nobody is going to dominate for the full 70, and other teams will always have a purple patch but weāve had seriously slow starts the last two days and gone way too long without scoring. There should never ever be a ten minute period where you score nothing, let alone longer than that.
Itās something that weāll need to sort to go to the next level. You just make it way harder for yourself by having lull periods.
What 6 forwards would you pick?
If we had all players available I would go
Nash
Dempsey
Hegarty
Casey
Flanagan
Gillane
Nash is yet to take off at senior level ā¦ I dont think Hayes will be dropped provided he is fit, one of our very few performers last year. I agree with @aristotle re Dempseyā¦ Heāll score an outrageous point but you may not see him for another 30 minutesā¦but If Kiely can get him more involved youād take him all day, big but for now thoā¦ maybe best off the bench for nowā¦ Peter Casey is the real deal ā¦Himself and Gillane are our two biggest scoring threats ā You work it so that one or the other is getting on plenty of ball.
The good news is that we are developing options ā Not so long ago we barely had 6 forwards to argue about. ā¦
I would play Hayes for Morrissey, the aim
Is to get the strongest team available. I do agree with the thoughts on Dempsey but he is very classy.
Fucker has the ability, no doubting it for a second.
Also if basing Flanagan at full on league form , surely Tom Morrissey should be there as he has been one of our best forwards in the league
It is a good problem as we have stated but I want the BEST 15 even if positional changes have to be made.
