The game in Mulli gar was not a non event. It was a blatent indication of a complete lack of planning. We failed to score for 18 minutes in the second half and for a long time looked like we were going to be a laughing stock for the rest of yhe hurling world. Our full bsck line wad filleted against Tipp and but for the fact that Westmeath didnāt have the cuteness to see through it ee would have been filleted again had that been any other opposition.
Our biggest problem is the speed in whivh the ball comes back at us when we loose posession from 10 onwards. We are not putting enough pressure on the backs coming out. We also seem to habe lost the appetite for fighting for dirty ball. This was one of our greatest strengths last year and we have lost it. I also think that they are being flogged to death in training. I would blame one individual for this but I am not willing to name him on this site.
Overall it has been a very disappointing season. I fear for us at the moment. A win on Saturday will cover up a lot of cracks but I do not believe we have the knowhow to kick on. I certainly believe we have the hurlers but there is a coaching issue which is not necessarily a a management issue
I normally hold fire, but Iām just not seeing it with Paudie. Proved not a wing back last year. Not one of our top two mids and workrate v Tipp at midfield was way below what weāve come to expect from Browne and Ryan. Wonder would he have lost out if Condon was fit. Maybe Iām being harsh, heās playing in a severely malfunctioning team thus far after all.
Humphrey is a strange fish. A regular writer to Progress (Portmarnockās parish magazine) persistently complaining about the unkempt state of neighboursā grass verges in the parish for a decade or so.
The game in Mullingar was in the melting pot until the 60th minute. Only seen the highlights of the Clare game but would seem to have been done and dusted after half time
To be fair to Breen he normally wins one puckout, one free and scores a point in every game his started in the last 3 years. His also odds on as the first player to be subbed off in the big games.
He is as honest as the day is long but his striking is poor especially when his running through on goal which he does far more often then Hannon as an example in the HF line. Iād probably have started Dodge myself but itād be a toss of a coin.
For a fella of his size itās a pity he doesnāt put the paw up more often but he is a useful player for us and does work hard to be fair to him.
Lot of talk of a sweeper for this game. Most teams play only one or two up front these days. We have two pacey corner backs that are good on the ball, either could play sweeper if needs be, and Richie has done it before too. If we actually come up against a team that plays a three man full forward line then grand, thatāll suit us at the other end.
Would never doubt Breens commitment but it wrecks my head he canāt win more ball with the size of him.
The only reason he is on is his height as well
Hannon is an enigma, clearly a superb hurler, but bar KK we havenāt seen him put it together for twenty mins never mind 70 in a long time
Even for the club in recent years by all accounts, the lad has bags of talent, his suffered with his confidence after that semi in 13, but he has performed decently enough for me this year and was harshly dropped against Westmeath. That performance against KK last year is in him and itās a pity we donāt see it more regularly. He has to work an awful lot harder on Rushe though, If you stop the CB on any hurling team even at Junior level youāve a great chance of winning the game.
