Started excellently and could have been out of sight if it wasnāt for some nervous wides in the opening half. At 2-8 to 0-2 it should have been curtains but Tipp, and OāRiordan in particular, got the radar working and atoned for some dreadful misses of their own.
David McCarthy made some vital saves but I thought Pat Simon was immense tonight. Best Iāve ever seen him in a green jersey. Ran himself into the ground and linked up well with others also. Hegarty and Byrnes were colossal in the air but are a bit vulnerable when turned and run at, something Clare will do plenty of. Richie English is in good form also and broke even with Tippās best player on the night.
A lot to work on - Ronan Lynch is clearly off the pace and some of our shooting is a bit scattergun but, tonight, the result was all that mattered. 4 championship defeats in 8 days would have had me looking for a rope.
We get knocked down, but we get up again.
PS - Colm Lyons is no more an inter-county referee than a bucket of spanners. Barry OāConnell can have no complaints over his double-yellow but Lyons is clearly out of his depth at this level.
My room mate made a cunt of the recording but John Allen said it wasnāt a red but Iāve yet to see the incidents myself and neither tbh. O Connell looked comfortable at 3 for intermediates but you couldnāt move richie after tonight.
He was an excellent minor, very underrated. He is an excellent wing back and more mobile than what we have there already. Sean Finn will start the next day. Byrnes needs to go cb, he was excellent when there. We have a terrible habit of hitting aimless ball against a wind going for hail mary points is braindead. Cian Lynch is so good but he needs to do the simple thing with the ball. Pat Ryan man of the match, outstanding.
Iāve seen him carrying ardscoil in the Harty cup from 6 when was only in fourth year and was sold on him then. He has had some massive performances for the minors and was probably more of a stand out player than Cian over two years. Suffers from being moved about all over the place though, I think he may have been shoved in at full forward at one stage today even (?). He plays best in the middle third. He has been excellent at wing back for the club. Very little hurling done recently so Iād expect him to improve. Hopefully he delivers on underage promise, I expect he will but may take some time.
