against Clare in 2010 springs to mind for me⌠he was very good on the night, probably Limericks best performer.
you could play breen wing back but not centre back
if you wanted to move hickey out you could try paul browne in the corner and give cian lynch a shot at midfield
We have a number of options for corner back without moving Browne back, his best position by far is at midfield, I wouldnât go disrupting that line. Youâd have Alan Dempsey, Richie English, Steve Walsh etc who could slot in corner back without disrupting it too much. Cathal King could even play there if required.
Either which way, TJ has a full winter now to look at fellas and come up with a plan. Iâd very much like it if he got together a training squad for the winter full of younger lads and fellas who have been in and around the panel.
We wonât win an All Ireland without having options from the bench in tight games, and also we need a persistent goal threat.
Three of the younger breed that are worth looking at as corner-backs are Shane Irwin (Bruff), Brian Finn (Bruff) and Mike Casey (Na Piarsaigh). All 3 are a year out of minor and should be included in any winter training plans. Irwin was in college in the US last year and was very late to join up with the U21 panel. Unfortunately, it showed on the night v Clare but heâs a far better hurler than he looked then. Not sure if heâs returning to the States but, if he isnât, he should be involved.
Casey is the older brother of Peter on the minor team. Was doing the Leaving this year so wasnât involved with the 21s as a result. Stevie OâReilly of Ballybrown is another of the 2011 U21s that has drifted from the intercounty scene mainly due to work commitments. Tough and solid and is worth trialling if available.
The other Morrissey twin, Paddy, wasnât involved with this yearâs minors but is playing extremely well at club level and should be involved with next yearâs 21s. Add Darragh OâDonovan, Richard English, Colin Ryan, Dean Coleman, Sean Flanagan, Diarmuid Byrnes, David Dempsey and a few others and you have the basis for a good U21 squad next year. There should be a closer link (certainly early in the year, at least) between this and the senior squad in terms of training programmes. A few may make the leap across but theyâll have to be prepared from the start.
The interview on Off the Ball with Seamus Hickey was excellent. He seems like a thoroughly alright sort.
Indeedâ I suppose it helps, ya know, when the chap can talk, I suppose, without using, you know or I suppose, every second or third word, ya know? Thatâs what I think anyway, so I do.
Can you provide a link to the interview please?
here you go, palâŚ

Elvis, as you well know, the involvement of players will be impacted by the management put in place following experience across the two years of minor.
most younger inter county players are thoroughly alright sorts*
*apart from Nordie ones
Why are ye all so keen to move Hickey centre back? The guy puts in a performance of a lifetime at corner back following up an excellent season there. Leave him where he is.
@corner back knows the score here.
@centre back, anything to add to this debate?

The 21s and the intermediates. We have a very strong team that needs a bit of depth. We have a rake of players that look like they will make the step up to senior panel level in two to three years time, and we have a senior manager in place for the next couple of years. Now would be the time to get decent u21 and intermediate setups in place and link them more closely with the senior panel.
Are you suggesting we should build on the season just gone??? What kind on nonsense is that??
Thatâs fair enough, but isnât the composition of any squad at any level defined by the whims of the management? I think weâre all agreed that a bit of joined up thinking is definitely needed. Is that possible in Limerick, however?
Because there is a bit of a consensus that we could do with a different centre back and most people think that he is the best player for centre back in Limerick, is why. Thatâd be my view anyway.

Itâs not the Limerick way.
If such a rating existed, Iâd rate this post âsadly agreeâ

Younger? What age is he?
The willingness of the players to play for the management rather than the composition of the squad
