Munster club junior hurling semi final result - Feohanagh/Castlemahon 2-12 Modeligo (Waterford) 2-17
Disappointing result for the Limerick champions. At half time - amid a dense fog - they looked in a strong position to advance to the final, leading 1-11 to 0-10. Wing forward Jamie Butler wreaked havoc with his sideline cuts, nailing two points and creating the goal with a booming effort that landed in the square which a Modeligo defender dropped into his own net.
On the restart there was only one team in it, though. A quickfire 1-02 set the tone for the remainder of the half. The Waterford champions totally took over, an impenetrable half back-line the platform of their dominance as Feohanagh made little headway in attack. The second Modeligo goal was another og, the unfortunate defender coming out with the ball let it out of his grasp, almost hand-passing it past the 'keeper for the second own goal of the game.
Feohanagh were reduced to 14 with about ten minutes left (a straight red for an off-the-ball offence spotted by the linesman) but the game was gone from them at that stage. They went almost the whole second half without scoring before grabbing a couple of scores at the death (a pointed free and scrappy goal) to put some gloss on the scoreboard. The west Waterford men fully deserved the victory.
Hard luck to Feohanagh but they’ve had a smashing year. I reckon they’ll more than hold their own at intermediate level next year and might be dark horses for promotion.
Also credit to the club for the half time entertainment which blared over the PA system. Her eyes they shone like diamonds…
