GAA receive full report on Hawkeye issues

Wednesday 13 July 2022

The GAA can confirm that a full report into the issues relating to problems with the score detection technology in use in Croke Park last weekend has been received from Hawk-Eye.

A combination of unrelated issues, including minor hardware failures, led to an erroneous finding for a score towards the end of the first half of the first GAA Football semi-final, which was promptly queried by match officials who subsequently took the decision to award the score.

Full end to end testing of the system will take place this week, after which a final decision will be made as to the deployment of the system for Sunday’s GAA Hurling Final.

Hawk-Eye have also confirmed that there were no historical issues with the system and that the problems experienced relate to last Saturday only and specifically to the Hill 16 end goal for that specific moment in time.

The GAA is to undertake a full review of its own protocols relating to when and how the system should be stood down if similar challenges are to arise in the future.

You can just picture some simpleton Muldoon probably plugging Hawkeye in and out repeatedly trying to get it work.

Probably ran on the discontinued Adobe Flash Player

That’s some nonsense now.

It just happened at that one specific moment in time where the ball happened to be kicked over the bar. Lol

You’d hope they’ve some sort of plan b anyway. Put two refs down their to help the umpires or something.

You can see some very controversial incident unfolding where the umpire signals for Hawkeye and then realises oh shit I’ve to call it.

:joy::joy:

The three in a row thing really adds something to this match and the way that it has all worked out you just couldn’t get a better matchup.

Limerick have been hugely impressive for 5 years and are starting to get into the conversation of best team ever.
Kilkenny would be charitably described as struggling with consistency for those 5 years and seem to have found something in recent weeks.

In isolation those two paths are mildly interesting. But when you layer in the history of these current teams with each other and the overall topic of hurling legacy and how that applies to both counties it makes it an enormously important contest in a few ways.

Back in 2018 Limerick made the breakthrough and it was through a series of fine line contests. The 2019 loss to Kilkenny is an interesting “What If?” question. Would they be going for 5 in a row on Sunday had they won there? Probably not given the traditional psychology of repeat champions. But this Limerick team have a score to settle with this Kilkenny team and that of course adds to the contest. But let’s get back to the topic of repeat champions and more specifically 3 in a row chasers.
The record of 3 in a row chasers is not good:

  • Kilkenny 2016 failed in final to Tipperary
  • Kilkenny 2013 failed in Quarter Final to Cork
  • Kilkenny 2008 succeeded and won 2009 too.
  • Cork 2006 failed final to Kilkenny
  • Kilkenny 2004 failed final to Cork
  • Kilkenny 1994 failed Leinster semi to Offaly
  • Galway 1989 failed semi final to Tipperary
  • Kilkenny 1984 failed Leinster semi to Wexford

That’s a 1 in 8 success rate in my lifetime which shows what a remarkably tough bar Limerick have faced this season. You need so much to go your way with regard to form and injuries because everyone is going all out to topple you. And the evidence is there of how that has manifested itself. Clare twice, Tipperary, Waterford and Galway played to a much higher level against Limerick than against anyone else this year. If you take the performance of Limerick and Kilkenny in their last 2 games in pure isolation to create a form line given that they both played the same two opponents you would come the conclusion that Kilkenny should be warm favourites. Kilkenny won the two games by 17 points, Limerick 6. But absolutely nobody would consider making Kilkenny favourite.

This is a massive game for this Limerick team in the context of this team’s legacy. Win three in a row and you’re elevating yourself into the top echelon of all time teams. Lose it and you’re no longer in the conversation. Look at the list of the teams that failed 3 in row, e.g. Cork 2004-2006. They are not in the conversation. Talk best of all time and you have to have the Kilkenny team 06-09 right in the forefront of your mind. So Kilkenny being the opposition here is really fitting. Fitting for Kilkenny to be the team defending the legacy of the 06-09 team. Fitting for Limerick to have the chance to right the 2019 loss that could have had them further down the road of repeat winners.

It’s a cracker of a final pairing. Before you even start talking about individual players or coaching.

Good post. On the point of n being in the conversation for all time greatest team though, there is no conversation really. In terms of modern greats the conversation is about second to kk. Even if Limerick win Sunday there still isn’t a conversation about their greatness compared to kk, they’re still firmly second.

Problems experienced last sunday only relate to the hill 16 end???

That is nonsense Conor Glass had a perfect point disallowed by hawk eye in the the canal end goal…why was shane walsh’s effort rightly corrected as a point and not Conor Glass’s point??.

the gaa has to answer that…

I don’t think it should be forgotten the circumstances of limericks three in a row.

Winning a behind closed doors all Ireland where you didn’t deal with the aftermath and chaos off winning an all Ireland can only be beneficial.

Over the two years due to covid Limerick players have played a lot less games than many three in a row sides have had to deal with whether it be with the clubs or colleges or whatever.

The fact replays are a thing of the past can only help us. Injuries were an Irish and finishing off Clare in extra time as opposed to another game is again a big help.

Overall despite being together for five years I think due to covid this team is very fresh due to the long enforced break over lock down and playing far less games too.

It shouldn’t be forgotten Limerick are missing cian lynch too. Not many counties win all irelands with the best player in the country on the side lines.
