He left a European Cup behind him in 2007 losing the semi-final to Milan. Although Rafa was probably due a win against him at that time having lost both league games in 2006-07. I don’t think United were as strong from 2009 onwards after CR7 departed. 2007-2009 was the peak of that team.

As mentioned by someone earlier they were incredibly fortunate to win the finals in 99 and 08. Bayern were weak from crosses yet Ferguson decided to play Beckham in the middle. Even allowing for suspensions Beckham should have been out wide. JT’s ego helped Fergie in the other one. Numerous other tactical fuck ups from Fergie in Europe.

Ferguson wrote a letter to Benitez, mansplaining the victory over Milan in 2005 back to him, highlighting his insecurity over this. Later Carlos Querioz was brought in to deal with tactics.
Superb mental gymnastics from the liverpool crew here. Rafa, with a 25 year coaching career, coaching amongst others the European royalty of Real, Inter Milan, and Liverpool (although now unwanted outside of China…) is a tactical genius with his one European cup and 2 UEFA cups. Fergie, however, is a numpty with his 4 European trophies including one with fucking Aberdeen!

There’s more to management than tactics. Ferguson would a wider skillset, particularly motivation and man management. Benitez would have the edge as a tactician.
