I know a couple of Galway hurlers and they are doing cardio at the moment. They are doing 5 x 1km runs trying to do the 5 in under 4 mins each with a 60 second break in between. One of the lads can break 4mins for 3 and over for the other 2. 17mins for 5 km is ridiculous.
I’m about 13 stone at a shade over 5’10’’, I’d go under 20 minutes in the morning but not by much, but I’m 46 now so that’s not bad.
One quick way to cut time is to wear proper shoes for racing speed, that means very light, should be worth a minimum of 30 seconds over 5k if you’re running in cushioned heavy shoes at the moment.
other than that you need to be running decent milage to thepoint where 5k is just a stroll in the park.
I would have thought most county hurlers could do a 5k in under or around 20 minutes, not that its really relevant to hurling IMO
Think I ran about 17’ 40 during the summer which was almost a PB. I was flying it back then. Got injured in October and trying to get back into now. I’d be hard set to break 19 at the moment but hopefully be going well if I can get a good month of training in.
That’s top running pal.
Its very simple. Get out and run as often as you can. By simply doing that your aerobic engine will come on a tonne.
You can then add specific speed sessions such as 8 x 400, 16x 200 etc. They really help to make gains once you plateau.
Im 45. I think diminishing returns have kicked in. Id struggle to do sub 20 now. Id do it but it would not be easy.
Im just enjoying getting out for a run these days. If races came back, Id apply myself more. Another sub 3 is my main long term goal.
I was back in Ireland at a meeting about three of four years ago and there was a 5k run/race one evening. I entered mainly as you got a nice running top, and finished second to some young lad by about two minutes. He said he hurled with one of the Limerick lads who had just retired (possibly dodge, I can’t quite remember) who was he said another minute quicker than him.
I don’t know what time I ran, maybe 19 something, I was younger and a bit fitter and it was a straight flat 5k.
Ps we all know the Galway lads are drinking the arse out of it this time of year.
Run downhill
I’ve done 10km the past two Sundays
With an 8km and 5km during the week.
Happy enough with that. I’m miles off where I was in the summer, but I found today’s run relatively easy compared to last week so I think I’m getting back in the groove.
You’re sore today id say?
Stiff enough but 20 mins with the massage gun was a big help. Will get out for a slow loosener tomorrow I’d say
You’ll be worse tomorrow.
That’s not what I need to hear!
What about a 5km challenge for February lads? Register your fastest 5km for the month. Can be a segment or standalone run?
What’s the point
Fenners could do it running backwards and bate ye
Good to be optimistic about the idea anyway
I almost certainly need two operations before I can run 5km without serious pain
It’s about self improvement mate. We are all winners.
