Found it amusing though how the little people, with whom the Tory govt in the UK are bringing in a host of socially repressive policies on top of, were there happily waving their little union jacks for an inbred family wedding who are bankrolled by their taxes. No democrat could agree with monarchies, I dont know what happened the last republic referendum here but how Aus is happy to have that hun on their banknotes beats all.
On the visit itself, I cant help wondering this is being driven by McAleese as something to remember her unremarkable 14 years by. Might be useful marketing for Ireland as a tourist destination. Hardly worth 30m euros though. Useful to take the heat of the current govt who seem to be struggling already.
To my limited knowledge of the situation I think people felt the alternative was no better than what they had. Seemed mental to me as they could have taken their opportunity to get rid of her and and then deal with the aftermath then. But Australians are odd folk for the most part and many seem happy to still be the Queens subjects.

Yep this is what McAleese wants as her legacy. She started quietly then spoke well after 9/11 then 10 years passed so like recent GAA presidents she has decided that her term of office should be remembered for something. Massive waste of money and ridiculous hype about an irrelevance though.
