Manchester United 2022/23 - The Reign of ETH

Can I just stop you there

The Glazers have given each manager fortunes to spend, wages no barrier but yeah it’s their fault. Nothing illegal in the way they ‘purchased’ the club. Fergie facilitated the takeover by falling out with a few Micks over a horse. The fact he’s still on board with the Glazers should raise eyebrows but none so blind…

Maguire and Wan Bissaka were both top class players before they signed for United, there’s loads more examples, it’s crazy :man_shrugging:

Ah Maguire was always a carthorse.

And AWB had one season with Palace where he was relatively solid defensively but nothing to suggest he was worth what they paid.

A lot more expected of full-backs in clubs that dominate possession and actually want to win things. AWB would still be excellent for a counter-attacking team.

The glazers were deciding a lot of the targets. They refused to sell many players managers wanted out. Didn’t really give anybody anything.

AWB has a lot off field issues. He done well enough at the start but he just never developed on either.

They’re the biggest spenders out there. They’re paying a geriatric 500k a week to throw a few shapes.

They are only paying him because of the revenue it creates off the field. That’s why it’s unlikely he’ll be moved on.

Was 80m on Harry Maguire driven by projected jersey sales?

No he was signed when Ed Woodward announced that the club was having a “cultural reboot” which was basically just signing English players who understood the league. Needless to say every other club took note and man united paid through the roof for all the signings.

It was based on City being willing to pay 60m for him. Like Sanchez and Ronaldo before these ones where they celebrate beating City to a signature have not worked out well

You could argue berbatov as well.

Van Persie was an outlier

So an ownership that is accused of not spending beat a petro funded club in a bidding war?

Who accused the club of not spending? They are wasting so much money it’s not even funny.

The way they spend is incredibly flawed. They always spend way more when they miss out on the champions league.

So any club that is negotiating with them will know their desperate.

The contracts they hand out were insane. The likes of jones, smalling, lingard, shaw and a few more were giving extended deals to protect their transfer value.

The best thing they could do now is to stop spending and flood the academy with money. They get fleeced time after time in the transfer market.

Even the radiot deal is just idiotic. He is not going to change anything and you’ll be down another 30 or so million.

I wouldn’t agree with that, Maguire was a fine player with Hull and Leicester and nobody was surprised when he got a big move.

He would have been good for Arsenal back in the 80s. Too slow and too thick to realise it.

Having Ngolo Kante playing in front of you is a help.
