Everybody suffered in the recession. Nobody lost their job in Ireland because they were a white, straight man. Feminism, as the clip which I linked to earlier shows, is also about men not having to feel they must go into certain traditionally âmaleâ trades or professions. Why should men not be teachers or nurses or carers? Every traditionally âfemaleâ job can be done just as well by men.
White male identity politics is indivisible from Trump, Brexit, and the rise of the far right in Europe and elsewhere. White male identity politics is an explicit and angry reaction against the increasing rights recognition of and visibility of racial, ethnic and religious minorities, women and LGBT people. Itâs a reaction against the voices of those people and groups rightly growing ever louder and more unapologetic.
In all of it is a reaction against âpolitical correctnessâ (again a deliberately pejorative term). âPolitical correctnessâ, if people want to use that term, is an inherently good thing. Itâs fundamentally based on respecting others. If you donât see imagined victimhood in the white male identity politics of Trump, Brexit and the far right in Europe and elsewhere, youâre not so much not looking hard as not looking at all, because it is the essential fabric of this type of politics. Ireland has got off very lightly so far in that we donât have a significant far right, but be in no doubt there are no shortage of dangerous actors both internal and external trying to stir up troube and create a situation where the growth of a far right could happen. These people are waging a mass scale propaganda war online.
The idea that white males should engage in identity politics is indeed utterly laughable to me, because the increase in rights for minority and marginalised groups in no way whatsoever threatens their rights. There is literally no need whatsoever for white straight male identity politics. Yet it not only exists, itâs booming.
Nowhere do white, straight men lose their jobs or get discriminated against because they are white straight men. White, straight men are the least oppressed people on earth.
But for white, straight men who engage in identity politics, even having the same rights as minorities and traditionally marginalised groups cannot not good enough for them, because their sense of identity depends on a sense of them being superior to these groups, that they should have certain privileges that others donât. For them an increase in the rights of the marginalised and/or minorities equals a diminution of their rights. Thatâs self-evident bullshit. Itâs the same mindset as hardline unionism in the north or pro-apartheid white South Africans.
Thus they constantly whinge about feminism, immigrants, âpolitical correctnessâ, or anything which vaguely represents the upholding of the rights of the marginalised or minorities. These sort of neurotic and paranoid views are extremely widespread on this forum. Of course what is at the heart of is the playing of gullible young men by con artist politicians who see votes in whipping up this imagined victimhood, and by an endless army of right wing media contrarians who specialise in lies and bullshit and who themselves are total opportunists.
This has been the rightâs strategy for decades - to transform politics into an imagined culture war in which the oppressors become the oppresssed. And now, itâs literally all that right-wing politics has left, because right-wing politics of the type practised by the Tories and Republicans has been an unmitigated economic failure, dividing populations into an oligarchic, rent-seeking class who rule the roost, and an exploited class who suffer from declining wages, increasing job insecurity, lack of affordable housing, healthcare and education, and the demolition of labour laws.

When looking at the presence of the far-right in Ireland you have to understand that thereâs a nexus between a whole host of different right-wing and far right issues - anti-abortion, anti-immigration, anti-EU, anti-vaccine, anti-LGBT, pro-Brexit, pro-climate change denial, anti-welfare state, pro-Trump, pro-Russia, pro-the European far right etc. Not all far right actors in Ireland will concentrate on all these things but thereâs a distinct common thread linking them all.
Ireland has been an outlier so far in Europe in that the far right has made no headway at all in party politics, but iff that continues to be the case, it wonât be for the want of trying by far right actors.
Gemma OâDoherty is currently the most prominent. Itâs been obvious for probably three years at least that she has been moving in a far right direction but she has gone full far right since her failure to get a nomination for the presidency. A quick dig into her Twitter feed is very instructive if you havenât been paying attention to what sheâs been up to. Sheâs looking to carve out a niche for herself as an Irish Alex Jones. Sheâs genuinely crazy.
Leo Sherlockâs theliberal.ie masquerades as a news website but is in fact a right wing propaganda site, which plagiarises and (very badly) repackages news stories from âmainstreamâ outlets and puts a far right-wing slant on them. Sherlock paid damages these outlets to settle breaches of copyright. The site engages in what pretty much amounts to fraud by running fake competitions on Facebook in order to attract âlikesâ, though most of its âlikesâ on Facebook have likely been bought.

Thereâs a guy from Dublin called Rowan Croft - https://twitter.com/rowanwcroft - who was a leading figure in a far right propaganda tour of Ireland called Grand Torino involving Canadian far right âpersonalityâ Lauren Southern, who is banned from entering the UK.
Croft has a YouTube channel. In one of his videos b, he bizarrely films himself walking around a deserted Rooskey, Co. Roscommon like a pound shop Conor McGregor waffling hate speech against immigrants into his phone.

Irish journalist Gavin Sheridan has done good work on exposing the nexus between a lot of these far right actors. Google and Facebook ban 8th Amendment referendum advertising because their platforms were being hijacked by far right propaganda was a clear sign that the international far right are interested in Ireland. Politics.ie has a slightly more diverse clientele but it largely descended into a far right sewer several years ago.
After Hours which is the most popular forum on Boards.ie has been under sustained attack by far right troll accounts for quite a while now. A lot get banned, then simply re-register before gettng banned again and starting the same process again.
Thereâs a rag tag bunch of far right groups in Ireland and Iâd wager almost every member of them is on the internet amplifying their message, be it on forums, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook etc.
Since Lucinda Creighton left Renua, they have pretty much gravitated to being quasi-far right. Iâve little time for Creighton but one thing she isnât is a fascist. Renua has gone full dog whistle since she left.
Then thereâs Justin Barrettâs âNational Partyâ, âIdentity Irelandâ, there was the attempt to start a branch of the German neo-Nazi movement âPegidaâ in 2016. The âIrexit Freedom Partyâ is a thinly disguised creation of outside actors allying with far right actors in Ireland.
The âIrish Proud Boysâ are a branch of the âProud Boysâ who are a violent far right group started by a guy called Gavin McInnes who is a leading far right âpersonalityâ in the US.
âGenreration Identity UK and Irelandâ which is run by an Irish woman, Damhnait McKenna, is a branch of the far right âIdentitarianâ movement.

There are certainly many hundreds and likely several thousand accounts like the below (about five of the below are definitely real people, but the rest are either bots or sock puppets). A dead giveaway of an âIrishâ far right Twitter account is that it includes an Irish flag in its name, in a similar manner to how pro-Trump sock puppets include an American flag. They often have profile pictures of Michael Collins or something to do with 1916 or some obscure Irish nationalist figure and these pages usually try to give off an air of creepy Celtic mysticism. Now I canât say for sure who is operating these accounts, but Iâd say many of them are bots operated from the US or Russia, with others being duplicate sock puppet troll acounts operated by real people in the US, Russia, Ireland or elsewhere.
