I’ve told stories here before about working in a scrap yard. Well, they had a big machine for cutting up the cars called ‘The Frag’. The cars would come out in a million different pieces on twenty different conveyors.
A family came in one day after a funeral and personally oversaw the loading of a deceased family members motorbike into the frag.
The M50 is as dangerous a road for a motorbike as ever I’ve seen, and I regularly commuted on the M62. The safest thing to do on any motorway is to sit in the outside lane, and gtf off it as soon as possible otherwise. In the outside lane you only have to worry about traffic on one side.
That’s very sad.
We were caught in the M50 yesterday also getting off the ferry. Google maps detoured us round Meath and it was a delay of about 50 mins in the end using some small country roads, along with half the country. Id not fancy commuting along them that’s for sure.
As an aside, I’ve decided I’d like to live in east wall or stoneybatter. Both lovely spots.
I don’t like the M50 at all myself because I’m a shit driver & more or less blind, which are drawbacks. I don’t sit in the overtaking line, as it’s against the laws & spirit of the game of driving & I don’t like being in the inside lane of three, as you always get folk slowing right down & jamming on the brakes when they approach their exit. Plus you have people joining the motorway into that lane in front of you. So I spend most of my time in that middle lane & you feel boxed in & vulnerable at times. You see all sorts of awful driving - lads cutting across two lanes in one go, dangerously close to other vehicles & so on. Ergo, it’s an uncomfortable experience no matter where you’re positioned on the road.
The middle lane is also an overtaking lane.
I’m talking about being on a bike only.
The M50 feels very unsafe on a bike if it’s at all busy. It’s very bad for vehicles cutting in and out without warning. At least on the outside you’ve only traffic from the left to watch for.
I did a First Aid course recently and during it we were given a scenario to assess -
You are driving on the M50 at 3pm Friday afternoon. You come across an accident, a car has crashed into the barrier. There is 4 in the car -
the driver is conscious, not responding to you when you speak however, just staring ahead with her hands on the steering, no signs of bleeding.
The front passenger is screaming, her legs are jammed trapped under the dash of the car due to the impact.
The young man in the rear passenger side seat has a catostrophic bleed and is unconscious.
The infant in the baby seat behind the driver is slumped unconscious.
Who do you attend to first?
I’d say the answer is don’t touch any of them. Call the Fire Brigade. A lad who has done a first aid course in a GAA club is in no way qualified to assess crash injuries.
