I thought so too but there was a guy on CNN last night saying that banging the hull/making noise for three minutes on the hour and half hour was a well known distress signal.
This appears to be what they were picking up.
Even if they located the sub, is there much they can do at this stage? I guess they would need some way to tie a cable to it and drag it to the surface.
My understanding is If they are hearing banging it means it’s at the surface already but they are bolted in from the outside.
The yanks would be able to ping a missle shaped object on top of the water
