The standard of goalkeeping is gone way back from even a generation ago. Admittedly the puck out was much easier for the goalies back then - bate it as high and as long as possible - but the standard of shot stopping has really regressed.
The likes of Quilligan, Collins, whichever chump Galway inevitably throw out, every Hogan for Tipp, Fanning for Wexford, and everyone outside Kilkenny and Limerick are liabilities.
Quaid finishing up will hurt Limerick probably more than any outfield player, when the time comes.
I don’t think the Waterford goalkeeper is a whole lot better. That was very weak near post goalkeeping for the 4th Clare goal and his puck outs were very hit and miss. He pucked two out for Clare lineballs.
Agree about TDB. Initially thought he had tracked across the face of the goals which often causes a lad to lose his bearings. But he was more or less under it the whole way.
Yeah I suppose it stands to reason when they are looking for a completely different key skill ie puck outs. Same in football and soccer probably as seen in the likes of onana.
The Waterford full back line is a disaster area. Prunty is a big loss there. He’s not the most mobile but he’s solid enough in full back basics and has a bit of presence around the square. Ian Kenny isn’t up to it. He’s very weak aerially. Yesterday reminded me a bit of 2007 semi final against Limerick. Waterford doing most of the hurling and every time it looked like they were seizing the initiative and might just kick on, they seemed to haemorrhage a soft goal.
True but the previous generation was probably a bit of an anomaly? Fitzhenry, Davy, Joe Quaid, Cummins were a better group of goalkeepers than any group there’s been since. We haven’t had a really good one since Davy. At the same time Murphy and SOK are two of the best ever.
Fitzhenry, Davy, Cummins and Cusack were some of the best goalies ever. Crazy to think they were all pretty much around at the same time. JQ was excellent too, didn’t have the longevity of the others.
Nash was excellent for Cork, too, in fairness. He’d be a significant upgrade on Collins today.
Watching on tv I thought Barron had a good game with a good few significant moments. TDB was a long way short of the level that he’s capable of but also, is the defence set up now very different to what it’s been for many years? I’ve given your post a like for the two footed challenge on the Tipp keeper.
