Munster Senior Hurling Championship 2024…part 2

I think I asked this on another thread but are there any alternatives in Waterford ?

The Ballygunner management team. If they weren’t so hung up with winning Rosenborg county championships

Any competent and organised club manger, the likes of either of the Mullally brothers would be an upgrade on the Davy circus. Maybe they could ask Colm Bonnar either.

They could do worse than being back Derek.

A losing bet but close.

Isn’t David Franks part of the Keith Rossiter management team in Wexford this year? Not sure where that leaves him as regards Ballygunner in the split season model.

Would Cummins and Fintan be interested in it if Cahill is retained in Tipp - surely they will give him his additional year to make it a four year term seeing as the players and board are all behind Liam.

Stephen Molumphy would be another favourite of the Waterford County Board. Not sure where he’s at currently as regards his army commitments. He wouldn’t fill be with a lot of enthusiasm.

As an aside Molumphy’s two young lads are two serious hurlers for U10’s. Saw them in action in the Ballyduff Upper U10 tournament over the weekend.

You’d risk not getting the job then. Look at Henry with Galway.

I wouldn’t touch the Waterford job .

For any management teams coming in after Davy, there’s inevitably some physical and mental baggage for a year or two after he departs. Players tend to be both burnt out and demoralised and it’s tough for the new set up to pick up the pieces. Has happened in nearly all his intercounty jobs that he leaves a mess behind that takes a while to tidy up.

Throw in key players getting on and possibly finishing up and not a massive budget, suddenly the Waterford job doesn’t look very attractive.

It’s a pity for them really. They were right on the brink with those minor and u21 teams that went toe to toe with us before we made the breakthrough. Dictionary Derek was the wrong choice to get anything out of em. Way too defensively minded for that bunch of players. By the time Cahill got his hands on them, they were already scarred and McGrath talking them up didn’t help either. Fast forward to Davy part deux and the writing was on the wall.

Pretty much spot on dodgy.

He has a lovely habit of promoting lads who aren’t good Enough too and who’ll remain loyal to him after he’s left.

You hear over the years Davy continually mentioning how he’s in contact with players or mentioning how well he knows them undermining the new management.

Franks is still with Ballygunner alright.

Philip Mahony will make a great Waterford manager in time.

With more adventure in 2017 Waterford could have beaten Galway.

They never really through the shackles off and gave it a go against a Galway side under immense pressure.

Waterford won’t have as good a chance.

Similarly with Wexford in 19. They completely froze with the finishing line in sight in the semi final v tipp.

Surely we’ve enough about us on tfk to create a set up for the Waterford job?

Some of the most knowledgeable hurling men and the right age profile as well.

Derek didn’t too bad at all. He’s got closer than anyone to landing Waterford’s first All Ireland since 1959. Derek’s last season was 2018, a season when Waterford were absolutely blighted with an injury crisis after the 2017 run to the All Ireland Final, so the 2013/2016 minor/U21 winning sides largely only came after Derek.

Appointing Patsy Fanning in 2019 was not a good move.

I agree but he had to just had to loosen the shackles a bit in the 2017 final. Galway were there for the taking

He did a great job and but for a Kevin Moran wide and some very questionable refereeing decisions, it was there for them.

2019 was a desperate Championship from them though. They had some squad on paper that year. Everyone was there.

In fairness we were there or thereabouts until a momentum killer of a wide from Kevin Moran. That and the inability to get Austin Gleeson into the game
