It might be far from snobby but it’s towards the other end of the spectrum from Keane. It’s impossible to justify the variance in how they were treated by the Irish media over their careers. Keane broke all records for Ireland but people don’t like his Dublinness. A few like @farmerinthecity have changed their minds since his record transcended to unarguable, but there’s no good reason he was disliked and mocked for much of his career but people didn’t like his background.
I don’t think I ever read a piece in the national media criticising Damien Duff. He was a fine dribbler in confined spaces but had some glaring weaknesses that nobody mentioned because he was more affable and acceptable to the wider public.

His tendency to repeatedly fall over used to piss the hell out of me back in the day now that you mention it.

Is this just coz Keane was much more of an arsehole when younger than Duff ever was? Nothin to do with snobbery. You go around doing a head over heels after scoring a goal then your setting yourself up as a cocky lad and not everyone likes that. Duffs just a quiet humble enough lad
Doing a tumble after you score doesn’t make you an arsehole. People had prejudices against him and protected those judgements onto him, portraying him as an arsehole for completely inoffensive things. Wasn’t he criticised on here before for applauding the fans when be was going off?
No idea about that. But I know for example if I did a head over heels after scoring when I was a young fella there would have been a queue to give me a kick up the hole for being an arsehole. And plenty would still think it. Nothing to do with he fact that he’s from Tallaght.
I’d also suggest that a most people outside of Dublin wouldn’t have a clue as to the relative poshness levels of churchtown and Tallaght
Good to see you agree. And I’m sure he fact that he was from Tallaght didn’t make it any better or worse.
Any BBQ with your poppy wearing English bezzer recently mate?
yes, we had a fantastic bbq last week, they really go the extra mile in terms of bbq’s here. The marinades are on a different level to at ho,e

Your point isn’t completely ridiculous but why does everyone - media and fans - love Richard Dunne so?
I’ve heard Keane get dogs abuse from plenty of working class dubs at games and elsewhere too.
He’s far from universally popular despite being arguably our best ever player (in terms of stats at least) and certainly our best striker for whatever reason.

I think he’s a good player but an arsehole. Same as what I think of johnny sexton. Not unusual to respect ability but dislike someone I’d have thought?

Fcuk those working class Dubs Keano is the man to get rid of the loser mentality that plaques Irish soccer like a disease!
Why do people care what type of personality our 61-goal striker has?
But, even if they did, he’s actually regarded within the game as an excellent character and trainer.
Obviously you’ll get bluffers like @caomhaoin and @dancarter and blueshirts like @The Wild Colonial Bhoy making up things about him. But legends of football like Giovanni Trapattoni build teams around him.

There was a thread on here a couple of years ago when the likes of @Rintintin and @Julio Geordio were wishing he could be a bit more like Kevin Doyle. A meek character short on confidence is just what you’re looking for in a goalscorer.

Sometimes Bandage talks through his hole but then again sometimes I find myself in full agreement with him, like now!

I couldn’t give less of a shit really, and certainly being an arsehole no bar to being a top sportsperson, ROG, Sexton Ruby Walsh etc.
Main point here which Rocko appears to have gotten away with is that he was trying to claim that because Robbie is from a less affluent area than Duff that the media and fans were harsher on him when in fact I believe it’s solely because he was a bit of an arsehole when he was younger and Duff wasn’t.
